Pakistans civilian government, after completing five years term will bow out on the night of Saturday, March 16. As per the constitutional requirements, the country is to be led by a caretaker prime minister during transit to the next government which will be installed as a result of elections. The elections are scheduled to take place in the first week of May, 2013. The caretaker prime minister and his team will have 60 days to complete the assignment.
As per provisions of the constitution, the caretaker prime minister is to be nominated through consultation between the outgoing prime minister and leader of the opposition. Both the consultees have proposed three names each which include three retired judges, one politician and two economists. One of the two economists, one Dr Ishrat was governor of the central bank during Musharraf regime and the other, Dr Shaikh was also a minister during Musharraf era and also minister for finance during the tenure of outgoing administration.
It is widely speculated that given the state of economy mismanaged by the politicians, one of the two economists will be nominated for the slot of caretaker PM. It is also being speculated that Dr Shaikh is a strong contender because of his relations with international donor who will be required to come along to help fix economy. Dr Shaikh is also said to have the support of Pakistans powerful military which will be expected to provide stability during the interim period. A source in the ruling party also confirmed to the media that former finance minister Dr Hafeez Shaikh was leading the race followed by Dr Ishrat Hussain for the slot of the caretaker prime minister, as Shaikh had also won the blessings of opposition party, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif.
