Ethnic differences do exist from the start of humanity, It is the Central power that keeps anything united. Unless and until one cannot achieve that power, unification is not possible.

Muslims were stuck with 7th century rules and traditions, where as the rest of the world moved on,developed and became powerful.

One reason for that is if muslims want to move with the rest of the world then they have to leave some of the Islamic principles and if they do that Islam will become weak.

On topic, was there ever such a thing as the Ummah. I mean, in school history we learned that the favorite ploy of coming to power of most Muslim monarchs was to kill brother or father. Difficult to see unrelated peoples of different ethnicities and languages and races and geographies then coming together under one banner. Especially when there is a tussle and a split in the banner itself.

@Zarvan should first wonder if the Muslim brothers living in ONE nation (his own) can first settle their differences and learn to coexist peacefully together. The Ummah can then have a small start and resurgence from within.
