July 29--AHMEDABAD -- An air-conditioned, double-decker chair-car train which was announced by the then railways minister Mamata Banerjee during the 2011-12 Rail Budget, will finally start running between Mumbai and Ahmedabad from Monday.

Train no 12931 will leave Mumbai Central at 6am and arrive at Ahmedabad at 1pm. In the return direction, train no 12932 will depart from Ahmedabad at 2.20pm and reach Mumbai Central at 9.40pm.

The nine-coach, red-and-yellow train with an average speed of 100-120kman hour will run on all days except Sundays and will halt at Borivali (a Mumbai suburb).

Each coach of the train will accommodate 128 travellers -- 74 on the lower floor and 54 on the upper deck. The train is only five inches taller than a normal train but has a 70 per cent more carrying capacity than a coach of the Shatabdi Express (78) or the Brindavan Express (73).

A senior railway official here told that the marginal increase in its height took care of the constraints such as overhead structures, bridges, electric traction equipment and roofed platforms.

These coaches have LHB fiat rubber bogies with air spring with secondary suspension like Volvo buses, which controls the jerks while travelling. The train has a stainless steel body and consists of seven chair-car coaches and two power generation wagons, and boasts of a special high-speed design with air springs and its coaches are fitted with a control discharge toilet system.

The specialty of the German-designedcoaches is that they allow for a higher speed up to 160km an hour and have a higher passenger capacitycompared to older types. They are anti-telescopic and do not turn over if the train derails or gets involved in a collision. The improved suspension system of LHB coaches ensures more riding comforts for the passengers. The microprocessor controlled high capacity air conditioning system of the LHB coaches gives passengers better comforts during summer.

What's more, every coach has fire extinguishers on its gate. Equipped with fully automatic doors, each coach has eight emergency windows and a mini pantry with a fridge and amicrowave.

There is already an AC double-decker train operational between Howrah and Dhanbad. The Chennai Central-Bangalore AC Double Decker Express will also be launched soon.

Double-Decker trouble on track
KOLKATA, 19 NOV: Indian Railways' showpiece Double-Decker train that hit the tracks on 1 October after lying idle at Howrah for over a year, is incurring huge losses with a paltry 17 per cent passenger occupancy on every run.
The fully air-conditioned Double-Decker train, which runs between Howrah and Dhanbad five days a week, was a pet project of the erstwhile railway minister, Trinamul Congress chief and state chief minister Miss Mamata Banerjee, whose party still holds the railway portfolio. It had cost the Indian Railways Rs 2.5 crore to get the Double-Decker rake manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala.
According to railway sources, the train which runs from Howrah as the 12383 UP Howrah Dhanbad Express at 3.20 p.m. on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and as the 12384 DN Dhanbad Howrah Express from Dhanbad at 5 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; has been registering extremely low occupancy since day one of the run on 1 October. Comprising seven chair car coaches, the Double-Decker has a capacity of 128 seats per coach. “But it's been over a month and a half since the train was introduced and the average rate of occupancy is stuck at around 17 per cent of the capacity. In terms of numbers, just 152 passengers are travelling in the train as against the 896 seats and this is resulting in huge losses,” said a senior railway official.
This despite the Double-Decker's fare being the same ~ Rs 315 ~ as for other super-fast express trains running between Howrah and Dhanbad. A section of railway officials is blaming it on the poorly chosen timings of the Double-Decker train, which makes it compete with the popular Shaktipunj Express that leaves Howarh at 2.30 p.m. and with the Coalfield Express that departs from Dhanbad at 5.55 a.m.
Others add that designating the Double-Decker on the Howrah-Dhanbad route was done “whimsically” and without any viability study.
Besides, in between Howarh and Dhanbad, the Double-Decker stops only at five stations ~ Burdwan, Durgapur, Asansol, Barakar and Kumardhubi ~ whereas the other express trains stop at 11 stations en route and thus draw more commuters.
Now, to counter the extremely low occupancy, the Eastern Railway, which owns the train, has thrown open the unoccupied seats in the Double-Decker train for booking through the Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) from 10 November.
This means that anyone who wants to travel in the Double-Decker will be able to buy a reserved ticket from the UTS counters at Howrah and Dhanbad even minutes before the departure of the train.
Double-Decker trouble on track
Now you should understand that people select only best possible timing with reasonably good facilities & they are ready to pay normal fare but it seems that meager fare for AC coach is still out of your range. So better purchase 2nd class ticket in other trains. Railway is going down the drain due to people like your mentality who wants to use best available facilities in least experiences. That's why there is daily accidents. Someone just grab the railway ministry & throw MAMATA out. I am sick of her political gains over survival of railway.

And what did it led you to perception that it will be crammed? For you only I am going to explain basics of it. 1st thing double decked mean more seats in same virtual(not real as you stated just opposite) area but more space per passenger on average compared to normal ones. 2nd thing yeah it's cheap. Passenger can travel by paying equal to super fast trains while it's faster than super fast trains because less stoppage with additional facilities like fully AC controlled by MICRO Processor, pantry car etc.. Faster, cheaper, fully AC & above all comfort-ability.

@Risingsun; you are absolutely correct about the poor timing of the train you mentioned. I travel in Coalfield express frequently and find the chair cars very much occupied. But a completely furnished AC coach like this one fails to attract the average middle class.

I feel wrong route was chosen to start DD trains, it should have started between tier 1 cities or Tier 2 cities, not like Dhanbad.
