Don't know what a matcha dessert is? Don't worry, we gotcha

The powdered Japanese green tea has the city hooked!

Lotus and Nutella are so 2017, matcha is everyone's latest obsession now.

And if you ask us, we're hooked.

The powdered Japanese green tea has grown in popularity in Karachi, not just for its many reported health benefits but also because of its unique flavour.

The powder is versatile and can be used in drinks (lattes, frappes, smoothies), desserts (pudding, ice cream, cake) and meals (crepes, croissants, noodles). You name it and you've got yourself a matcha recipe.

Karachi may not have experimented with matcha this extensively (we hope eateries start soon!), but we cannot deny that the matcha offerings in the city are worth a try (or 50). Here are five eateries in Karachi where you can get your matcha fix:

Fuschia's Matcha Ice cream and Chocolate Wontons

Price: Rs 585

This dessert is an underdog. Seriously. Crispy wontons stuffed with hot chocolate sauce, paired with sweet green tea ice cream is a combination that'll take you to the heavens and back. The dessert incorporates multiple textures and temperatures giving you a heightened experience. One for the books, for sure.

Esquire's Matcha Frappe

Price: Rs 650 (almond milk costs an extra 300)

Sweet, thick, with the perfect blend, Esquire's Matcha Frappe never disappoints. It's the perfect companion this summer. And for people who are lactose intolerant (raises hand) they offer the frappe in almond milk too and it's just as good as with regular milk. Get this with a generous topping of whipped cream. You'll thank us.

Makotoya's Matcha Pudding

Price: Rs 550

If you want a dessert which won't shoot your sugar levels through the roof then Makotoya is the place to go. Their Matcha Pudding is topped with a thin layer of matcha glaze and red bean paste -- oh, we know what you're thinking, but TRUST US, beans never tasted this good. The three different layers; pudding, glaze and beans pack tons of flavours and textures. Try it. Now.

Easy's Matcha Soft Serve

Price: Rs 385

Many say Easy's Matcha soft serve doesn't taste like matcha, and though there is a slight rose flavour to it, there's no denying that when you're looking for soft serve flavours in the city other than vanilla and chocolate, Easy's Matcha definitely satisfies the craving.

Bingsu's Matcha flavour

Price: Rs 450

This new place offers Korean milk-based shaved ice desserts with toppings, in layman terms Korean gola gandas. They've got two varieties of matcha, one is traditional (w/ red bean paste) and the other with chocolate. Of course their traditional stuffed with red bean paste is a winner. The sweetness of the red beans cuts through the bitterness of the matcha and adds a wonderful flavour in the mouth. This is matcha heaven topped with matcha whipped cream.
