Airport immigration officer denied a PhD student clearance for not speaking Hindi US-bound student sparked a twitter debate.

Mumbai Police’s Special Branch has ordered a probe into the into the allegations made by a 27-year-old PhD student that an immigration officer at the Mumbai International Airport refuse to give him clearance on Tuesday night becuase he could not converse in Hindi.

After the incident, Abraham Samuel, a biomedical engineer completing his Doctorate in Chemistry at Clarkson University in Potsdam, US, sparked a debate

“Was just denied immigration by an immigration officer at counter 33 Mumbai Airport, for knowing only Tamil and English and NOT Hindi! What a disaster! Reported the officer, hope they take action,” said his pinned tweet,

His tweets tagging political leaders sparked off varied reactions on twitter. Some accused him of having an anti-BP agenda; some thought he was trying to reignite the Hindi v Tamil debate

My true frustration is (that) everywhere else, except in India, they respect me and my language. In my home country, people like them deny basic rights on the basis of languages" he said

adding that he hoped the central government better educates its officers. He said he was emailing a formal complaint to the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) and would demand an apology

. . . . .
The Indian divide really big. The race is different, the only language uniting them is English and the colonial system.

I pity these Tamils, what they have to go through in India (and Sri Lanka) btw didnt know 600 yr old Urdu derived Hindi is bharat's mother tongue. Regardless of how much they look up to these Northie Aryan invaders, Tamils will never be accepted as Indians

Tamils are welcome to go back to Tamil Nadu. In Sri Lanka they have been nothing but a menace.

Tamil menace is an out come of wannabe Aryan invaders (Sinhala -Indian) tyranny. Aryan Sinhalas should go back to original homeland Bangladesh and Aryan Indian to Central Asia

Lol manlion. You crazy. This is why even neighbouring Southern states don't question Tamil nationalism.

Live & let live I guess.

Lol...
@Nilgiri, I hope you know your mother tongue - Hindi.

I am fairly good at Hindi.

Pretty isolated incidents like this are found wherever there are multiple languages in a country. I personally know of what much of the Hong Konger attitude was/is towards full Mandarin adoption for instance....but doesn't mean there is some massive sustained unbearable friction going on more generally (that only a few threads holding something together)....like some stronky feelz ppl in this thread already insinuating.

A mandarin speaker can quite easily understand a cantonese speaker convey and vice versa. And PRC custom officer never rejects a hongkonger or Chinese national who can't speak mandarin from leaving... While that can't be say for India. :enjoy:

See the different.
