Donald Trump sparks new arms race with space weapons – 'star wars inevitable'

DONALD Trump is developing space weapon technology “faster than the rest of the world” and will spark a new arms race, according to an expert.
Trump presented a personally-commissioned 108-page Pentagon report on missile defence that was two years in the making.
The US President promised the creation of a “space-based missile defence layer” and “the new and advanced tech” would replace “incremental progress”.
Russian military expert and retired colonel who served in the Russian missile defence, Mikhail Khodarenok, says these are not empty claims and will happen in the “near future”.
He added: “The militarization of space is inevitable, and the United States will quit any relevant non-proliferation treaty that stands in the way.
"There are no missile defence systems capable of firing in space right now, but there is reason to believe they will appear imminently.
“Their role will not just be to provide missile defence, but also to offer cover to America's orbital fleet.”
The expert also said the weaponry will decisively alter the strategic balance.
Space technologies may offer the US protection against rogue states such as Iran and North Korea, Khodarenok told RT.
But he also questioned the capability of already-built state-of-the-art defence systems such as THAAD and AEGIS which are untested in the field.
He concluded: “If a block of manoeuvring ICBMs on a descent trajectory, or hypersonic gliders such as Russia's Avangard, are deployed against US missile defence its effectiveness will be reduced, and in some cases may be close to zero."
The comments come after former White House and Pentagon adviser Philip Coyle warned of a new space race over hypersonic missiles.
Hypersonic missiles can travel faster than the speed of sound, making them incredibly hard to stop.
Mr Coyle explained: "As these new hypersonic weapons are developed, they will make Donald Trump's missile defences obsolete.”
Hypersonic missiles can travel to a target in almost half the time a traditional intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) can.
"If an ICBM could get to its target in 30 or 35 minutes, a hypersonic missile might get there in 20 minutes," he added.
Recently, Russia developed the Kinzhal hypersonic missile.
