Protesters say that dogs are not being slaughtered in hygienic conditions

An annual dog meat festival in south-west China has begun, amid uproar on the part of animal rights activists.

About 10,000 dogs will be slaughtered for their meat at the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival in Yulin in Guangxi province on Sunday and Monday to mark the summer solstice, state media said.

One retired school teacher from Tianjin hit the headlines when she purchased dozens of dogs to save them.

Residents and vendors in Yulin say the animals are killed in a humane way.

Activists say the killing is cruel and an online campaign to ban the festival has been signed by more than 3.8 million people so far and the campaign has attracted considerable support this year from celebrities both domestic and foreign.

Celebrities including British comedian Ricky Gervais have spoken out on Twitter with the hashtag [HASHTAG]#StopYuLin2015[/HASHTAG]. Chinese pop star Chen Kun and actor Yang Mi have said they are joining the campaign on micro blogging site Weibo.

And Chinese actor Fan Bingbing and others posted a video online against the festival.

The festival began a few years ago according to state media.

The tradition of eating dog meat dates back four or five hundred years in China, South Korea and other countries, as it is believed to ward off the heat of the summer months, according to state news agency Xinhua.

However, this festival began in recent years, Xinhua said.

City officials have distanced themselves from the gathering. "Some residents of Yulin have the habit of coming together to eat lychees and dog meat during the summer solstice," the city's news office wrote on Weibo.

"The 'summer solstice lychee and dog meat festival' is a commercial term, the city has never [officially] organised a 'dog meat festival'," it added.

As in recent years, some animal lovers resorted to buying some of the dogs in order to rescue them.

Yang Xiaoyun, retired school teacher, paid about 7,000 yuan ($1,100; £710) to save 100 dogs on Saturday.

The BBC's Celia Hatton in Beijing says this kind of dispute puts the government in a really difficult position. The glorified consumption of dog meat generates a lot of negative foreign media reports, embarrassing the authorities. Also, the dog meat industry has been accused of many underhand tactics, including the illegal capture of family pets to use as food.

But at the same time, the government is wary of the increasingly sophisticated animal rights movement, she adds. Animal rights activists in China have formed a cohesive network on social media that extends to many foreign animal welfare groups. China's leaders do not want to encourage such a movement amid a wider crackdown on civil disturbance of any kind.

To Eat Dog, or Not to Eat Dog - The Atlantic

While the popularity of dog meat is declining in China and South Korea as pet ownership increases along with rising incomes, the dilemma of dog meat—a protein-rich food source—is arguably clearest in Vietnam. Today, more than 5 million dogs are killed for meat every year in the country, according to the Asia Canine Protection Alliance.

Why so ashamed of eating dog?

There is nothing wrong of eating dog, even white folks still eat it nowadays.

Dog eating in Vietnam came from China.

Vietnamese cuisine are scant, the available sources suggest that gia cay may have emerged as a dog-meat substitute almost as soon as dog meat itself was introduced in northern Vietnam from China centuries ago.

And, like in South Korea and China, as Vietnamese incomes have risen in the past few decades, more urban residents have started keeping dogs as pets. “[People] used to raise dogs to guard the house, and when they needed the meat, they ate it,” explained a retired Hanoian man who didn’t want to be quoted by name. “Now they keep dog as pets, imported from China, Japan, and other countries.

Everyone should stop eating meat, then we can talk about how to ban the dog meat.

I dont condone China for eating dog meat. Its been part of their tradition and customs for centuries. Who are we to judge other cultures because its seen as exotic and unorthodox in western countries.

Afaik Nagas in India also eat dog meat, being a vegetarian myself this used to give me creeps initially, but now I know that somebody's eating habits should not bother me unless they are snatching something from my plate.

Good, it is better for everyone to become a vegetarian or even a pure vegan.

We Chinese had invented the Tofu before, so it is going to be an excellent source to replace the meat for protein.

Didn't the local government already put a ban on it? And not to mention the thousands of national animal friends and animal activists who descended there to protest this? So I don't get where all the sudden fuss is all about.

To me, this whole thing WAS meant to be blown up in such a way so that one way or another, we Chinese could once again be slandered in some way. Once the balloon was up, idiots like this guy started talking crap out of their mouths. Alex Lee - Mobile Uploads | Facebook

And of course lots of other idiots would soon start flocking to this topic, like flies to a pile of crap.

Nope, most Chinese are pro-dog meat, so nothing is going to change.

We are not those pussy HKers/Taiwanese who trash their ancestor's tradition in order to appease their Anglo master.

Well, I guess I am one of those 'few' then. I can perfectly imagine that we ate dogs and cats as means to survive during times of peril like the Great Chinese Famine, but with today's abundant food supply? I don't see the need for it.

We should export the street dogs of Karachi to South Korea and China, especially if we can earn something from it... I think such an agreement was signed between S.Korea and Pakistan during the Musharraf Period. Personally maybe I say this because I don't like dogs... but its a good opportunity to earn some money.

Being a vegetarian has its pros and cons, more cons specially if you're choosy.

Yes , tofu is a good source of protein for vegetarians. In India vegetarians depend upon cottage cheese and pulses to meet their daily protein requirement.
The biggest challenge for a vegetarian is eating out, there's not much you can choose from.

And am so sorry for derailing this thread....

Our people can eat the dog meat in our home country whenever they want.

But our people should stop eating those endangered animals if you wanna talk about the serious conservation.

We could stop eating dog when we don't feel necessary anymore, but it is not about to appease the foreigners like HK and Taiwan.

The pure vegan eats no cheese, so Tofu is their only choice to acquire the protein.

Since they won't eat anything that came from the animals.
