Dockyard attackers planned to hijack Navy frigate

this is not even remotely possible.

No nuclear missiles are ready and loaded at all times. so not even remotely possible.

chill and attacks like these happen even in US where fort Knox get's attacked by some rouge Marine.

Definitely, it is an alarming sign for our armed forces. specially PN. We have seen some incidents before as well where navy officials were involved in some of the attacks.

you have raised valid questions.. Our military has been hiding its head in sand for a while now when it came to presence of fanatic elements like Al Qiada and TTP in navy. Remember Saleem Shahzad, a journalist who first raised this issue of presence of Al Qaida in Military and Navy, but he was murdered in suspicious manner and fingers were raised towards spy agencies.

now this is becoming reality and lots of water has been flown beneath the bridges.. just like the attack on Karachi Airport, the attackers knew that they wouldn't be able to hijack the frigate but the damage would done on the security claims! they succeeded in penetrating the highly sensitive location with inside help.

This is high time that military realizes this fact and starts screening the black sheep from within.

Pakistan’s military has traditionally been seen as a secular and disciplined organization. But the evidence is now overwhelming that it has been infiltrated at all levels by violent Islamists, including Taliban and al-Qaeda sympathizers.

Shortly following the creation of the state, the Pakistan Army realized that they were the disadvantaged force when engaging in direct conventional conflict with the massive Indian Army. Starting with the First Indo-Pakistan War in 1947, the Pakistan Army used Militant Islamists as a weapon against the Indian military. The Army used Islamist rhetoric to mobilize Pashtun tribesmen from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and urged clerics to issue fatwas ordering their clans into Kashmir. This was the beginning of the perpetual patron-client relationship between the Pakistan Army and Militant Islamists.

General Zia-ul Haq, led a military coup against his president after inciting Islamist parties to undermine Bhutto’s popularity. Seizing power, he set out upon his plan to establish a true Islamic system of government. Like senior Army officers before him, Zia used Islam to affect issues outside the military. However, he also implemented fundamental changes in the Army by introducing Islam into several aspects of the way it operated. This was the first time that Islam had official capacity in the military.

General Zia’s first move as the army chief was to change Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s original Army motto from ‘Unity, Faith, and Discipline’ to ‘Faith, Piety, and Jihad for the sake of Allah’. This move along with the declaration that he, the top Army official and leader of the nation, was a ‘soldier of Islam’, established the mindset that the Army was to embody. It was a further step in the changing of the mentality of soldiers in the military.

In addition to the changes affecting the atmosphere in the military, soldiers were recruited from a society that was simultaneously being impregnated with Deobandi madrassas that sprung up on virtually every street corner. Widespread Islamist sentiment was being fueled by the Afghan-Soviet war. American and Saudi funding coupled with homegrown support for the mujahedeen seated Islamic ideals further into the minds of Pakistanis, citizens, and soldiers alike.

It is no surprise therefore, that radical elements are increasing within the Pak Armed Forces that have been responsible for many of the attacks on Army and Naval establishments. This does not auger well for the armed forces. A radicalized army is a danger not only within but also for the security of South Asia and beyond.

Zia is undoubtedly responsible for introducing radical elements in the military... Moulana Maududi's literature was distributed among soldiers during Zia's regime.. till now the so called oath of SSG commandos suggest that it is only for Muslims.

Let's first wait and see from which branch the attackers were from.

people who are on the ships for months on end are usually scrutinized much more than someone who is in admin branch or something like that.

BTW, looks like the whole of Naval Intelligence has suddenly woken up and is working over time. Arrests as far as Mastung in Balochistan for fleeing suspects. This looks definitely like an internal plan.

Those arrested people were definitely a treasure trove.

I don't think that would be affected, since that is not something dependent on investor confidence or market sentiments. No matter what the PR about the navy is, the govt can always expand and modernize it if they have the desire and the money.
I believe you do not understand what I said. I've used the term 'investment' loosely, not coupled to a market or finance context. I.e. would you put public money into a public service that - apparently - cannot be fully trusted (and with navy ships like frigates and submarines, you are quickly looking at a couple hunderd million dollar per ship)? This has NOTHING to do with investor confidence or market sentiments....

Are those categories mutually exclusive?

This is dead serious business for the PN. Just as you said; its nothing to do with investor confidence. It has entirely to do with the higher command of the PN's confidence.
Just imagine a scenario where such a group is able to act similarly on a warship at sea OR (even worse) a sub on patrol at sea?
