Dhoni slams batsmen for playing to the gallery
PTI | Mar 13, 2011, 10.39am IST

NAGPUR: An infuriated Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni blasted his batsmen for "playing to the gallery rather than for the country" after the home team slumped to a three-wicket defeat at the hands of South Africa in a thrilling World Cup Group B encounter.

India suffered a stunning batting collapse on Saturday as they lost nine wickets for only 29 runs to crumble to 296 all out in 48.4 overs after being 267/1 in the 40th over.

"When you try to hit those big shots, you tend to forget that you are playing for the country and not for the crowd. In the process of trying to get those 20 extra runs, you end up scoring 40 runs less," Dhoni told reporters at the post-match press conference.

"Some were playing to the gallery rather than for the country," he said curtly, when asked about the assessment of Saturday's performance.

"There are times you need to curb your instincts of trying to hit every ball out of sight. If you play normally and play for 50 overs, you end up getting 325-330. I tried to shuffle the batting order. It didn't work today," he added.

Dhoni termed the loss of Sachin Tendulkar, who hit a blistering 111, and Gautam Gambhir's (69) wickets during batting Powerplays as the turning point of the match.

He also defended Yusuf Pathan's promotion up the order at number four though he scored a two-ball duck.

"Well, that's how Yusuf plays. Either he would get out quickly or he will play a big innings. He is that sort of a player. If he can survive for two to three overs he can really play long," Dhoni said.

About the frustration of watching from the other end as his teammates made quick exits during India's batting, the skipper said, "I have come from a small state like Jharkhand where I have seen at times how one loses the initiative. This is something one has to live with."

Asked about the decision to give Ashish Nehra the last over, Dhoni said, "Ashish has been our most consistent bowler at the death. He has bowled a bulk of his overs during Powerplays. But the ploy didn't work today."

Even though India were all-out for 296, Dhoni said he felt it was a defendable total.

"I believe that this was a big ground which became a challenge for our fielders. They picked our fielders and ran their singles and twos well. Also they were brilliant on the field. It also made the difference," said Dhoni.

"Overall I think the performance was good. If we could have fielded a bit better it definitely would have made the score look slightly bigger but at the same time we're not a side which is known for fielding," he added.

While the decision to play three pacers was purely based on Jamtha strip being one with good bounce and carry, the team for the West Indies match in Chennai on March 20 would be different, Dhoni said.

"Well, we thought that this track was conducive for pacers with good bounce and carry. When we select the team for Chennai, it will be a different selection altogether keeping the turning track in mind."

India (Ind) vs South Africa (SA): Dhoni slams batsmen for playing to gallery

Dhoni is correct. The bowlers did their job well. But after 267/1 (39 overs) to 296/10 (49 overs) is just unbelievable with the batting line up we have!!!

Looking forward to the next game against WI. I hope India will be second in the group.

it was a good total and Indian bating side is very strong. dhoni is not a good captain

Dhoni was never a good captain for Indian team

His luck make him popular as a good captain (do you remember last over of t20 cricket WC-he gave that over to part time spinner and India won the cup) but now his tricky decisions not going in right direction ...

Oh, don't worry.
He's just taking out his frustration on his team mates. :disagree:

that is a bad move specially at a time when a team is still going to play remaining matches.

he should have been soothing other players instead of venting his own frustration.

Sorry I dont agree --- luck cannot hold still for this many years and HE is one of the best captains, if not the best, India has produced.

And it was not a part time spinner - it was a fulltime seamer,Joginder Sharma that bowled the last over.

Its time Dhoni deliver with bat, After WorldCup I want captaincy forwarded to Virat Kohli, So that we can monitor Dhoni's invidual performance with bat, if he fails play Parthiv Patel. Enough with Chennai Super Kings blah blah, its not a team and IPL is not cricket. Set your priorities right Dhoni.

Common yar if luck is not the factor than what happened in last world cup ????

Buddy Dhoni reached to this position because of his luck and players like Sachin, Sahvag in his team ... otherwise he is not nothing

if u know batting is ur strength then u must capitalize on it,they failed on main agenda.
and we know our bowling cant stop even 338,so no blame on bowling.

Fortune favours the Brave.

And going by your criteria there is no single great captain - Clive Llyod had the Fearsome Four in addition to RIchards,Haynes,Greenidge ; Steve Waugh had Warne,Mark Waugh,Bevan,McGrath,Gilly,Ponting ; Ponting had Hayden,Gilly,McGrath,Lee etc.

It can go on - A good captain is one who can bring out the talent in his team, can remain calm even in the most desperate situation and I fond them in Dhoni.

A good captain according to me who can motivate his team not start fighting between team mates, not the one who always insert his favorite players inside team.

Sourabh Ganguly start killing spirit in team India he found new talent like yuvraj, gambhir even dhoni ....
