Brig (rtd) S K Chatterjee, strategic analyst based in Delhi on March 26 this year. India's sympathy for the Tamils, who fought secessionist war for two decades, has adversely affected its ties with Sri Lanka. Of late, Colombo has been developing closer ties with China earning Delhi's displeasure further. Beijing had supplied the much needed arms to Colombo on credit to defeat LTTE two years ago. Forcible fishing by Indians in Sri Lankan waters, now a regular feature, led to the arrest of several hundred Indian fishermen in the recent past. Angry, Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitha questioned how they dare to pick up her fishermen and called for military action against the tiny neighbour. With emergence of the Communists in power in Nepal, people have raised strong voice against the age-old economic and political domination of India - Indian hegemony - over the landlocked Himalayan country. Nationalist forces in Kathmandu have been demanding withdrawal of Indian Army from their land in Kalapani occupied since 1962 Indo-China war. They claim Nepal's land up to Bangladesh and Bhutan borders on the southeast, and return of hundreds of kilometres encroached along the border with Bihar and Uttar Pradhesh. Needless to say, China is gaining ground in Nepal to New Delhi's discomfort. Delhi's failure in Yangon Delhi's Foreign Office mandarins are now lamenting for the failure to win the hearts and minds of military rulers in Mayanmar. Millions of dollars were invested by India in developing roads, infrastructure and port. Despite that Myanmar has allegedly been providing safe sanctuaries with all facilities to the secessionist groups of Assam, Nagaland, Monipur and Tripura. All efforts by high profile Indian visits have failed to pursue Yangon to withdraw support to the secessionists fighting for independence from India. Rebel leaders are getting easy access to China, a close and trusted ally of Myanmar. Indira doctrine Except for brief tenure of Morarji Desai and I K Gujral, India has always followed a Big Brotherly policy - stick and carrot - towards its small neighbours as envisaged by Indira Doctrine. The key principles of Indira Gandhi inherited from her father Jawaharlal Nehru towards the neighbours were that no foreign power would be allowed to cross the Himalayas or allowed to interfere in South Asia. The region should remain under the domain of Delhi and the neighbours should follow her dotted line in internal and external affairs. The policy was akin to America's Monroe Doctrine about pre-eminence in the surrounding region. Desai and Gujral in their bid for a shift had laid emphasis on the need for good faith and trust as the basis of India's relations with its smaller South Asian neighbours. Needless to say that the Awami League government that came to power with a thumping majority in the 2008 general elections has provided the only ray of hope to Delhi. In compliance with her wishes the grand alliance government in Dhaka has handed over the ULFA leaders to India. Indian Foreign Minister S M Krishna visited Dhaka July 6-8 ostensibly to lay the ground for top level talks when Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh comes in September. Many in India branded the stone faced Singh a proxy prime minister of ruling Congress president Sonia Gandhi. Dr Manmohan Singh during his visit is also likely to ask for handing over of ULFA secretary general Anup Chetia to weaken its army chief Paresh Baruah who opposed peace talks without agenda of independence of Assam. Chetia is in custody of Bangladesh on completion of his jail term as his petition for asylum is lying pending. Water of the Teesta It is said a package deal inclusive of thorny border issue and sharing of water of the Teesta River will be reached during Dr Singh's coming visit. On the possibility of sacrificing about one thousand acres by Bangladesh in settling border dispute, the government is holding view exchange meetings with villagers along the Sylhet border to gain public support to its move. The villagers have questioned the necessity of fresh demarcation of border when it was done at the time of partition of India. The land now claimed by India had been owned and cultivated by the Bangladeshis for about 64 years. Strongly opposing fresh demarcation of boundary in the last meeting with the villagers last Tuesday (July 12) the residents vowed to spill any amount of blood to protect every inch of their motherland.

What can Dhaka offer to India apart from illegal immigrants

Keeping ne India part of India and much needed transit which India is begging for 42 years to develop the poor n backward ne India. 3.5 billion usd import officially and at least 3-5 billion usd worth illegal goods including banned drugs where cow trade alone worth 2 to 3 billion.

For illegal immigrants at first ban your useless BSF, 2nd stop discrimination against Bengali Muslim by terming them illegal immigrants, 3rdly ask your government to raise the issue officially to Bangladesh which your government has never done and never will.

I belive Tomato Boy is Pakistani so its not his BSF or Bengali muslims in India that he cares about.

But on topic, I think its self evident, that in South Asia, Indo-Bangladeshi relations are at its best compared to any other country. Nepal is going from bad to worse. Sri Lanka wants to keep that arms length. Only Bhutan and Maldives basically depend on India and are hence extremely close.

But with better Indo-Bangldeshi ties and more co-operation, the SE Asian side can be easily developed into a region of S.Asian influence if both countries co-operate and complement each other.

North east India is as or more developed than Bangladesh , let me clear this out first .

Didn't understand your second sentence thanks to your English .

For the third part , if we ban BSF you guys will enter our land freely without any obstructions . No , we won't allow you that privilege.

Out of there, Indians.

NE India more developed then Bangladesh ... It's in your dream. Last time I posted video of recent street view of Dhaka from
YouTube And challenged bhartis to show the rich and affluent life of the NE Indians. But got no reply. Majority of the NE Indians are dirt poor and depends on agriculture with virtually no industry. Only major source of earning is mineral resource export and that does not contribute anything to the ordinary people.

Regarding transit ... It will be 39 to 40 years not 42 years that india is begging for this transit from bangladesh to connect to ne india.

If your BSF guy is so efficient and protect the border then how come 20 million illegal immigrants that your some so called radical extremist hindu politician claim crossed the border in 40 years that means 1550 people daily and 500000 people per year over the
last 40 years. Do not you think this track record is enough to ban the useless BSF org.

even if we take in the last 10 years then we see BSF cold bloodily killed 1000 Bangladeshi where most of them were either poor farmer of the border region or cow traders. Most importantly none were illegal immigrants. So where is the illegal immigrants? Do not talk crap here.

that is sweet. But people of Bangladeshe believe it is one sided relationship from sheikh hasina.... india will have to work alot to earn trust of common bangladeshi people and that is clearly not happening. incidents linked with BSF worsening the situation. .No wonder people prefer china more than india..

i think heading is misleading, yes india want good relations with B.D but saying that dhaka is the only hope would not be right. plus Bangladeshis need to come out of the phobia that india will eat away their nation & resources. this is not the case & if Bangladeshis fear it then they should tell clearly to india that we don't want this or that. but agreeing on one side & complaing on other side will not work.

N Majority of the NE Indians are dirt poor
............

.........
Do not talk crap here.

Majority of Bangldeshis are also dirt poor . Yours is the only 4th world country in the world.Didn't read the rest of your post , there are more important sections on this forum than the Bangladesh section.

I don't even understand why some of my Indian friends waste time here . go somewhere where something of importance is being discussed rather than Bangladesh .

Adios .

1 correction is needed in your post. Per capita of bd is 818 usd with base year of 1995. Now government has taken initiative to raise it to 2005. This change of base year and shadow economy which is 45 to 82 percent of the total GDP per capita GDP is likely to be around 1200 or more.

N your NE Indians are poor n only depends on agriculture. Name just a few industry there. Which is virtually none. Its major earning is only exporting of natural resources which does not help any NE Indians.

If you really try to say NE is better then post some video of some best places of NE India so that we can see how much rich and affluent your so called NE Indians are ... I will post video that of bangladeshs.

Middle part was very easy if you have brain and courage to accept the reality. 1550 per day or 500000 per year was closing border illegally over last 40 years as per your radical Hindu politicians n your so called BSF were capable of doing nothing. So, do not you think it is enough to ban the BSF? Apart from that per year around 2 to 3 billion usd worth of cow is brought to Bangladesh under their nose to fulfill the demand of mouth watering beef of the bangladeshis ... Is it also not enough to ban the fully worthless n useless BSF?

Expecting an honest reply regarding the performance of your so called BSF?

Pakistanis claim:
Half of your country's population doesn't live in Bangladesh. There are like 3 million illegal Bangladeshis in Karachi alone.

http://www.defence.pk/forums/current-events-social-issues/113771-land-impure-5.html#post1842486

If 3 Million Illegal Bangladeshis in Karachi, Think about Lahore, Islamabad!

20 Million for Whole India v/s 3 Million in Karachi!

Which makes more Sense?

Bangladesh Annual Budget 2011 = 23.37 billion U. S. dollars

Bangladesh unveils 23.37-billion-USD national budget for next fiscal year

So Do the Bangladeshis spend 12.83% of their Budget on Buying cows from India?

Is the meat even Halal?

Oh Wait! You have just committed a Shirk by importing Cow from a Country of Idol Worshippers!

The size of shadow economy of Bangladesh is 45-82% of the economy which runs parallel to the real economy and the amount is 50 to 100 billion USD. From that buying cow from India is not impossible . N regarding halal cow... when we slaughter it by the name of allah it becomes automatically halal. You know beef is very popular in BD ... sikh kabab, chili beef and beef rezala are my favourate like many other bangladeshis.

Magic figure of shadow economy

Apart from that in Bangladesh only less then 1% people give taxes n mostly with fake account. Under this scenario it is very difficult for a government to make a huge budget. But it does not describe the real picture of the buying power of the people and amount of smmugling that happen across the bprder.
