The decision was cleared on Monday at a meeting of the National Implementation Committee on Administrative Reform (NICAR) chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“Sixteen union councils have been merged into Dhaka City. Both North and South city corporations have annexed eight union councils each,” Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told the media.

The eight unions included in the North are Beraid, Badda, Vatara, Satarkul, Harirampur, Uttarkhan, Dakshinkhan and Dumni.

The South city corporation got Shyampur, Dania, Matuail, Sarulia, Demra, Manda, Dakshingaon and Nasirabad.

The inclusion has increased the Dhaka City’s area from the current 129 square kilometres to 270 square kilometres, said the Cabinet secretary.

But the two corporations combined will still not be enough to rival Gazipur City Corporation in size, which with 329 square kilometres still remains the largest city in Bangladesh.

The 16 unions have a combined population of around 1 million, according to statistics from 2011, but the figure has risen since then.

The inclusion of new areas means 10.623 million people now live in Dhaka’s north and 7.5 million in the south.

The official population count for the two cities is above 18 million, but the figure is much greater in reality.

Elections will be announced in these unions once the wards are redrawn, said the Cabinet secretary.

.
Few things to highlight.

Total Area:

Dhaka North + Dhaka South : 270 sq KM
Gazipur : 329 sq KM
Narayngaj : 33 sq KM
______________________________________
Total : 632 sq KM

Population (2011 census)

Dhaka North + Dhaka South : 18.1 million
Gazipur : 2.5 million
Narayngaj : 1.5 million
_______________________________________
Total : 22.1 million

Growth (4%) : 26 million (current)

So we have now more than 2.5 crore people living in Dhaka...

Thats interesting.

632 sq. km is about the size of Singapore. But Singapore have population around 5.5 million but Dhaka have 26 million in same land area. This hyper density is killing this city.

i think Gazipur is heavily under utilized.

Gazipur have right density to be a city.5000 people/km2 is maximum for a city for not to feel suffocated. But core Dhaka have population density 10 times of that.

Singapore has relatively large unhabited areas though in the north and center around its main reservoirs + the other islands (natural + reclaimed) where few or 0 people live.

The urban jungle itself would probably compare roughly to the density of Dhaka I think.

Dhaka has to look at the Tokyo model for long term sustainability of high urban density. Bombay and others are now in a bad crisis and requiring expensive mid way course corrections in their urban planning and development...Dhaka should take the actions as quick as possible to stem the expenses that will arise later by being casual today.
