Destruction of Iran’s Cultural Sites Tantamount to War Crime: Envoy

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Ambassador to France Bahram Qassemi deplored a recent threat by US President Donald Trumbo to target the Islamic Republic’s cultural sites and said such moves would be nothing but war crimes.

“French scholars, scientists, and culturalists have heard that President Trump has threatened several times in recent days that he would mount military attacks on 52 cultural centers and sites of civilization and ancient culture in Iran,” Qassemi said on social media on Monday night.

“Perhaps because of his lack of familiarity with internationally recognized norms and legal regulations respected by the world, Mr Trump does not know that such acts are in breach of The Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict passed on May 14, 1954 and the Protocol I of the Geneva Convention passed on August 12, 1949,” he added.

“Everybody knows that such a behavior (and) destruction of cultural works and properties as a legacy of human society is tantamount to war crime,” the Iranian ambassador to France added.

Following Iran’s threats to retaliate the assassination of Lt. General Qassem Soleimani, Trump tweeted Saturday night that the military could target 52 Iranian sites, including some "important" to Iranian culture.

General Soleimani, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was the deputy head of Iraq’s Hashd al-Sha'abi (PMU), and a number of their entourage were killed in a strike by American drones near Baghdad International Airport in the early hours of Friday.

The White House and the Pentagon claimed responsibility for the assassination of General Soleimani in Iraq, saying the attack was carried out at the direction of US President Donald Trump.

In a message on Friday morning, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei warned that harsh revenge awaits the criminals behind the martyrdom of General Soleimani.

Ayatollah Khamenei also reminded all friends and enemies of the Iranian general that the resistance path will continue vigorously, stressing that continued battle and ultimate victory will disappoint the murderers and criminals.
