Deporting Rashed could be ‘game changer’ in Bangladesh-US ties: Momen

DHAKA, Jan 26, 2021 (BSS) – Foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen today hoped that the US’s new administration of President Biden would take the issue of deporting Bangabandhu’s convicted killer Rashed Chowdhury ‘seriously’ as it could be a ‘game changer’ in the Bangladesh-US partnership.

“I believe that the new US administration should look into this (deportation of Rashed) matter seriously. In fact, this could be a game changer in the Bangladesh-US partnership,” he said.
The foreign minister was speaking as the chief gust at a webinar titled “Bangladesh-US Relations: Opportunities and Challenges” organized by Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI).

Dr Momen expected that the US will deport Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s convicted fugitive killer Rashed Chowdhury, who is now residing in the US with fake immigration papers, in light of shared spirit of establishing justice and rule of law.

Saying that the issue of deportation of the killer has remained pending at the US side for more than a decade, the minister mentioned that Dhaka requested the US government to speed up the return of Rashed Chowdhury to Bangladesh to face justice.

Salman F Rahman, MP, professor Rehman Sobhan and Ranok Jahan, foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen, US ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Miller and Bangladesh ambassador to the US Shahidul Islam took part at the discussion while ambassador Farooq Sobhan presented the keynote paper with BEI president ambassador M Humayun Kabir in the chair.

The government had traced out that two of Bangabandhu’s remaining five convicted furtive killers, Rashed Chowdhury and Noor Chowdhury, are now residing in the USA and Canada respectively.

After knowing the whereabouts of the killers, the Foreign Ministry and the Law Ministry have been deeply engaged with the US and the Canadian authorities to bring back these two absconding murderers.

Earlier, the foreign minister said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had written letters to her counterparts in those countries to send the killers back.

Meanwhile, on April last, sacked military captain Abdul Majed, one of the Bangabandhu’s fugitive killers, was arrested and hanged at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj.

Majed was on the run for nearly two and a half decades to evade justice and after his arrest, he said he had been hiding in India’s West Bengal for the past 23 years and returned to Bangladesh on March this year.

Twelve ex-military officers were sentenced to death for the August 15, 1975 killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman along with most of his family members and five of them were executed while one died a natural death.

The five sacked army personnel – Syed Farooq Rahman, Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan, AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed, Mohiuddin Ahmed and Bazlul Huda – were hanged at Dhaka Central Jail on January 28, 2010, while another convict, sacked colonel Rashed Pasha, died a natural death in Zimbabwe while he was on the run.

Farooq Rahman, Shahriar Rashid Khan and Mohiuddin Ahmed of artillery faced the trial in the judge court while Huda was extradited from Thailand and another Mohiuddin known as lancer Mohiuddin was sent back from the United States after the then district judge Golam Rasul delivered the judgment.

. .
While punishing killers of a state head is important, I could think of a few other things that could be bigger "game changers" for BD-US relations:

- GSP access
- forceful Rohingya repatriation
- unrestricted access to procurement of advanced US military equipment
- investments in high value industries

True lol , but America wants probably to control Bangladesh if you want those 4 things you mentioned to come true.

There's no way America would sell it's best gear to Bangladesh unless we dump the Chinese completely.

Furtive, meaning specializing in "Furts" ?

This make sense as not all of them fired bullets on the day.
........

BTW, does anyone know what the current status of Risaldar Mosleh Uddin is?
He was arrested back in April.

Who knows - Hasina may be getting soft in her older years. She might spare the old guy....
Also, going back to summary hangings might anger Turkey, which we possibly don't want.

Risaldar literally shot Bangabandhu.
It would be a really cuck move to impede justice to appease another country no matter how friendly. I really doubt Risaldar would be spared.

Well I guess he hangs then. Gotta pay if he did it. It is sedition to oust a rightfully elected head of state (even if unjustified through undemocratic means), and in our country I believe the penalty is death.

It is just not okay to go around killing people just because you do not like them.
It sets a terrible precedent.
Zia learnt it the hard way (here I said it, he is complicit in BB murder. He did not just get lucky and become MLA three months into BB's death and then just happen to indemnify the killers.
........
So much for me being a Jamati. ).

Gotta tell it like it is.

I don't know beyond the shade of a doubt but Zia could possibly have been complicit. He after all pardoned everyone involved in that assassination using the indemnity ordinance.

Also - I don't know if you have heard but BB himself was a cadre leader in his day (under Suhrawardy) and with all the BKSAL and Rakkhi Bahini fiascoes he was involved in, you couldn't really defend him.

He himself may not have been the schemer, but he let others around him play fast and loose with replacing the army as a decider in local governance and that certainly did not help things. He (and his entire family except the two daughters, Hasina and Rehana) paid the price as a result.

They didn't even spare anyone close to him like the families of Sheikh Fazlul Haq Moni (our current Dhaka South Mayor's dad) and Serniabat.

My family members have told me that after the morning massacre and subsequent radio broadcast by Khandker Mushtaque Ahmed establishing new govt., no one in Dhaka mourned for him or his family. They were actually relieved. How far can you exceed your limits before people can feel like that? By then they had it up to their necks with the lurid excesses of Mujib's two sons, the nascent plans to establish dynastic rule, plans for BKSAL and Rakkhi Bahini etc.

All the bodies were carried in a common cargo truck from Dhanmandi and dumped in Banani Graveyard. Such was the sad end of a planned dynasty.

If ZIA didn't do it, someone else would have.

Allah does not like transgressors.
