DENEL REPORTEDLY IN TALKS TO SELL ARTILLERY TO A COUNTRY IN ASIA

Denel Land Systems is reportedly negotiating to sell T5-52 self-propelled howitzers (SPH) to an Asian country (source: IHS Jane’s Defence Weekly). Denel did not disclose the country, quantity, or scope of the contract, but there is a case to be made that this country could be Pakistan, which had tested the T5-52 SPH in 2016.

Denel Land Systems T5-52

The Denel T5-52 is a 52-calibre, 155 mm SPH. It is mounted on an 8×8 wheeled truck, with the standard system being the Czech-origin Tatra T815 truck with a 265-kW diesel engine. According to Denel Land Systems, the T5-52 SPH has a top speed of 85 km/h and can travel up to a range of 600 km without the need to refuel.

The howitzer gun itself, which appears to be the Denel G6-52, can fire base bleed shells to a range of up to 42.5 km. However, if equipped with Rheinmetall Denel Munition’s (RDM) M2005 Velocity Enhanced Artillery Projectile (VLAP), the T5-52 could potentially fire up to a range of 54 km at sea-level.

With a crew of four personnel, the T5-52 can brought into action (or withdrawn) within 60 seconds. The T5-52 needs two of its personnel to manage and re-load the ammunition. In terms of payload, the T5-52 can carry 27 projectiles alongside 26 charges. In addition, the SPH has a command-and-control system with automatic laying and navigation system, muzzle velocity radar, gun management computer, and communications suite.

Pakistan’s Opportunity to Develop Munitions with South Africa

In March 2017, Pakistan and South Africa signed a memorandum-of-understanding (MoU) to facilitate the “acquisition of defence equipment as well as cooperation in Research and Development (R&D), Transfer of Technology, Co-production/Joint Ventures in public as well as private sector.” | Read More

Is Pakistan the Potential Buyer?

There are multiple indicators that the undisclosed prospect is Pakistan.

The most recent of these signs was the fact that the Pakistan Army (PA) Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Qamar Javed Bajwa, made an official visit to South Africa in January.

According to Defence Web, the Chief of the South African Army, Lt. General Lindile Yam, stated that Pakistan and South Africa are engaging in “exploratory discussions relating to artillery.” Likewise, Bajwa had reportedly told South African media that the two sides were negotiating about artillery.

Prior to this, the PA had tested the Denel T5-52 in 2016. During the 2016 edition of Pakistan’s biennially-held defence exhibition, the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS), Denel had even displayed a T5-52 SPH unit.

Interestingly, according to the source that IHS Jane’s cited, trials had ‘recently’ occurred in Pakistan. It is not clear if these trials are those from 2016 or more recent, but if the former, it could indicate momentum in the PA’s SPH plans.

Pakistan is Improving its Artillery

In recent years, the PA undertook a series of acquisitions aimed at improving its artillery capabilities.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the PA procured 120 second-hand M109L tracked SPH. The M109L is a 155 mm system.

Old News. The T5 52 has been already tested by PA. They recommended some changes and asked for re trials. Though the news above sounds more of a marketing gimmick than any actual finalization of a contract of purchase etc.

Denel Land Systems is in negotiations with an Asian country to purchase the company's latest T5-52 wheeled self-propelled artillery system, a company source told Jane's .

The source said negotiations with the undisclosed country were ongoing and that other countries had also shown interest. Exact quantities or a potential contract value were not disclosed. The source also noted that trials had recently taken place in Pakistan.

The 155 mm/52 calibre howitzer was demonstrated to international delegates, including Jane's , at Denel's Overberg Test Range on 19-20 March.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is still undecided whether it will order a substantial number of T5-52s or upgrade its legacy G6 self-propelled howitzers.

Colonel Andre De Jager, chief of staff of the South African Army Artillery Formation, told Jane's that only six T5-52s were currently planned - enough to equip a battery - with deliveries expected either in late 2020 or early 2021. It is understood that the incoming T5-52s effectively replace six G5 towed howitzers that were upgraded and sold to the United Arab Emirates several years ago.

"We are at a point, in the next 10 years, where we need to make a strategic decision: whether we are going to upgrade the G6s that we have, or replace them with newer technologies," said Col De Jager said. "We are going to use the six in order to establish for ourselves whether doctrinally that is the way ahead."

Based a Tatra T815 8×8 truck, the T5-52 is a more mobility and cheaper platform than the well-armoured G6, with Denel officials saying the system is now comparable in price to a towed artillery piece.

The system is operated by a crew of four and can be brought in and out of action in 60 seconds.

Now who is wrong between you two?

At IDEAS 2016, Burt Van Staade, Executive Manager, Business Development, Denel SOC (Ltd) told Exhibitors TV that the 155mm T5-52 artillery system has been successfully trialed & tested in Pakistan for the past few months adding that "We have done extensive mobility trials, we have done firing trials, we have also done a whole lot of trials in the mountains with our artillery piece".

Denel is going through a tough phase financially and administratively, so may be it's just a marketing gimmick.
