The demand for Indian generic drugs has shot up in China amid the massive COVID surge in the country, with Chinese experts cautioning that fake versions of these drugs are flooding the market. China's National Health Security Administration said on Sunday that Pfizer's Paxlovid oral medication, which is used to treat Covid-19, could not be included in the "register of drugs in the basic medical insurance", because the company's quotation was too high, media reports here said.

The black market quickly moved to plug the gap. There was already a huge trade in affordable, made-in-India medication in China before the pandemic. Thousands of Chinese cancer patients rely on imports of generic drugs produced in India, as they are far more affordable than the approved drugs on sale in China.

Due to the massive short supply of Paxlovid, demand for Indian generic versions has gone up through Chinese e-commerce platforms.

"On the Chinese e-commerce platforms... At least four generic COVID drugs produced in India - Primovir, Paxista, Molnunat, and Molnatris - have been listed for sale in recent weeks. Primovir and Paxista are both generic versions of Paxlovid, while the other two are generic versions of Molnipiravir," Chinese media outlet Sixth Tone reported.

All four drugs appear to have been approved for emergency use by the Indian authorities, but are not legal for use in China, it said.

He Xiaobing, the head of Beijing Memorial Pharmaceutical, told Sixth Tone that India was "the only country where we can source reliable and affordable COVID drugs with guaranteed therapeutic effects".

"But the strong demand was used by illegal groups who produce counterfeit drugs. This will badly affect patients' treatment," he said.

China's health system catering to 1.4 billion people is under strain especially due to the heavy costs of drug supply which were controlled by multinational pharmaceutical giants.

At one time, Indian cancer drugs have become very famous for their efficacy and affordability.

Considering their popularity, a Chinese film by the name "Dying to Survive" showing the survival of cancer patients on the banned imported Indian drugs had a successful run in China

so? Can India make oxygen generators now?

(Yicai Global) April 26 -- Shares of Yuyue Medical Equipment and Supply soared after Indian medical facilities placed orders for up to 18,000 oxygen concentrators with the Chinese medical devices leader in recent days.

Nanjing-based Yuyue Medical [SHE: 002223] soared by the 10 percent trading limit today before ending 5.6 percent higher at CNY29.2 (USD4.50). The broader Shenzhen Component Index fell 0.9 percent.

Cailian Press reported that orders will grow as demand surges for oxygen concentrators, devices important in treating Covid-19, amid a severe and virulent second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India. The South Asian country is seeking supplies from abroad, according to overseas media reports.

Amid the second wave, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in India rose to 17.3 million at midday today, according to data from the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The country reported 352,991 newly confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, a new daily record. With an additional 2,812 deaths, India’s total fatalities stand at 195,132.

Oxygen Shortfall

As the contagion worsens, shortages of hospital beds and medical supplies, including of oxygen and medicines, have been reported across India. The price of oxygen cylinders on the black market has spiked seven-fold.

Yuyue Medical leads the market for oxygen concentrators, blood pressure monitors, and surgical instruments, and overseas exports. It has received many inquiries and orders from institutions in India and various donors, according to an insider. The company has a large production capacity and fast delivery, so orders are expected to continue surging.

While China basically entered a stable period of epidemic prevention and control last year, the pandemic continued to spread globally. As a result, Yuyue Medical received orders from dozens of countries.

Net profit at Yuyue Medical jumped 134 percent to CNY1.8 billion (USD278 million) last year from a year earlier on a 45 percent gain in revenue to CNY6.7 billion (USD1.03 billion). Its respiratory supplies division, which includes ventilators and oxygen concentrators, had revenue of CNY2.3 billion, an 86 percent increase.

Indian generic drugs used to have good reputation but some shady quality ones are getting smuggled in to the mix these years, now I heard many smugglers switch to Bangladesh made drugs instead

China promised to protect drug IP before joined in WTO. India is free to copy drug IP. Here we see the consequence.

Chinese are getting whacked by covid due to their evil deeds

All the world should help China in its time of distress, if they are running short of medicines there should be a mechanism to provide humanitarian aid to China free of cost so ooor peoole dont suffer.

Has China approached the UN for disaster relief and asked for critical supplies yet?
