List of the world's busiest airports by passenger traffic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

For the fist time ever, 2 Indian airports are amongs the Top 30 busiest in the world (By number of Passengers).

DXB/ OMDB catching up with Atlanta and Beijing pretty fast.

Interestingly, London Heathrow (Which was for many years in top 2-3) is sliding down quite fast .....

Also, if you see the list, it is actually a reflection of the world's GDP growth.... with European Airports slowly moving out of the list and Asian ones joining it.

Delhi (above Toronto/ Sydney/ Detroit/Munic and other heavy weights) has achieved highest rank for an Indian airport at 26.... and at this rate it will be amongst the top 15 in next 5 years.

Wait for Mumbai T2 to get completed later this year.

It will be way better than Delhi in terms of aesthetics and looks.

But for the long term, Mumbai is heavily space constraint (almost 1/3rd the size of Delhi, only 2 cross runways, etc). Delhi can be expanded to even handle 100 million pax. an year. Terminal T3 already is S.Asia's largest aviation hub.

Many in the list are transit airports like Istanbul. It does not have much economic significance, its more of a connection hub for flyers to transit.

An idea pioneered by SIN and HKG and now.... Dubai is running away with being the busiest transit hub. The amount of Emirates flights from Dubai is astonishing, but their model of connecting everywhere to everywhere is (According to me) cannot be sustained in the long term. Their O&D traffic (Origin and Destination) is too low as compared to big cities like London, New York, Beijing. As more and more countries become economically prosperous, point to point traffic will mean bypassing of hubs like Dubai, Doha , etc.

Only few markets like the Kangaroo route (as Australia can't be reached directly from Europe) will sustain hubs like Dubai, Doha, in the long run.

Don't get too excited, they are all NRI coming home for a visit. Non-diaspora tourism in India is nearly zero.

Best part of this growth is that it is around 95% Indian traffic (Passengers visiting India/ Domestic Indian passengers) and very few transit pax.

With the world class airports in Mumbai and Delhi, if we can attract even 50% of transit pax who uses Dubai, Bangkok, Singapore, etc.... guess where our airports would be.
