DSA 2018: Tigon goes on trial in Malaysia

Hanwha Defense Systems selected DSA 2018 in Kuala Lumpur as the location to unveil its new Tigon 6x6 armoured wheeled vehicle.

In fact, soon after the exhibition, the giant South Korean defence conglomerate will be conducting a fortnight-long trial with the Malaysian Army for this new-generation vehicle.

The Tigon is a successor to the Black Fox, which was developed by Doosan DST, and which was acquired by the Indonesian Army.

Four different weapon systems are currently on offer for the Tigon: a crew-served 12.7mm machine gun, and three types of RWS ranging from 12.7mm machine gun to 30mm cannon to 90mm gun. The vehicle’s weight varies from 21t to 22t depending on what weapon is selected.

The actual vehicle that will be used for the trials was exhibited on a stand belonging to AVP Engineering, a Malaysian company that has partnered with Hanwha for a number of years.

AVP Engineering specialises in vehicle products. For example, it is currently fulfilling a contract to outfit 500 ambulances based on Toyota chassis for Malaysia’s Ministry of Health, and it has previously supplied Ford F550-based ambulance bodies to the MoD.

The Tigon has a crew of two and it can carry up to nine passengers in the rear compartment. Able to operate at ranges of up to 1,000km, it features a central tyre inflation system.

A 525hp Caterpillar C9.3 turbo-diesel engine coupled to an Allison 4500SP six-speed automatic transmission offers a top road speed of 100km/h and a waterborne speed of 8.5km/h via waterjets. However, the amphibious performance is affected by the weapon system and level of ballistic protection selected by the user.

The Malaysian Army has long held an ambition for a 6x6 APC, especially for the type of United Nations peacekeeping mission that Malaysia is currently performing in Lebanon. There were once reports connecting the Anoa, a 6x6 APC from PT Pindad in Indonesia, to the Malaysian Army, but such a deal never materialised.

Doosan, which was since absorbed by Hanwha, had previously demonstrated the Black Fox to the Malaysian Army.

If the Tigon is selected by Malaysia, Hanwha would make the hull and subsystems while AVP Engineering would outfit the interior as part of a transfer of technology agreement.

The week preceding DSA 2018, Hanwha exhibited a scale model of the Tigo at DefExpo in India.

Boustead Naval Shipyard unveiled an New Generation Patrol Vessel (NGPV) Batch II design proposal.

Boustead is proposing this new design to the Royal Malaysian Navy as a more affordable variant of the existing patrol vessels (Kedah-lass) but "featuring a more stealthy design" according to a company representative.

The design features the same hull form as the MEKO 100 but with a new structure entirely made by Boustead. The Batch II is set to feature a scaled down combat management system (CMS) with just 2 to 3 consoles.

Boustead Naval Shipyard unveiled an New Generation Patrol Vessel (NGPV) Batch II design proposal.

Boustead Naval Shipyard is proposing to build six of these new patrol vessels in its Lumut shipyard.

"Our goal is to propose as much local content as possible" a Boustead representative explained.

A Boustead brochure shows the NGPV Batch II fitted with a 76mm main gun by Leonardo and a Thales NS100 radar while the scale model on display at DSA 2018 shows a BAE Systems Bofors 57mm main gun and a TRS-3D radar.

Again, the Batch II shares the hull form with the Kedah-class: length overall of 91.10 meters, beam of 12.85 meters, draught of 3.40 meters for a displacement of about 1850 tons.

MBDA MMP Medium Range Missile makes ASEAN premiere at DSA 2018

The European consortium MBDA, a leading missile manufacturer, is presenting for the first time its MMP Medium Range missile in the ASEAN region during the DSA 2018 exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

A week after having announced a new joint venture (JV) with the Indian Larsen & Toubro at DefExpo 2018 in Chennai, MBDA is now marketing its MMP to the Malaysian, and moreover to the ASEAN markets.

“Now in service with the French Armed Forces, MMP can be operated by dismounted soldiers or integrated into vehicle platforms. MMP has been designed to overcome the limitations of earlier generation ATGMs by incorporating the latest matured technologies to provide unmatched performance against all battlefield targets at ranges in excess of 4km,” said Time Riddle, MBDA Vice-President of Export.

The MBDA’s Missile Moyenne Portee (MMP, for “medium range missile”) was designed to offer a new generation of anti-armor missile for the French army which can be used as individual weapon by infantrymen and mounted on combat vehicles. French army plans are to acquire 400 firing posts and 1,750 missiles for infantry, armoured units and Special Forces of all branches by 2025, with options for further orders totaling 2,850 missiles.

In June 2016, French Company MBDA has announced the launch of series production of the MMP (Missile Moyenne Portée – medium-range missile) system. Since the program was launched in 2011, some 20 test firings and numerous ground tests have served to validate all the performance values required by the French armed forces, such as system resistance and employability in extreme environment and temperature conditions, shooting under infra-red guidance at a long-range target (4,100 meters), firing in confined spaces, or warhead versatility, to ensure effectiveness against varied targets such as combat vehicles, dismounted combatants in open spaces, or entrenched in infrastructure.

The MMP is a fifth generation land combat missile system which can be used in fire-and-forget mode, which does not require further guidance after launch such as illumination of the target or wire guidance, and can hit its target without the launcher being in line-of-sight of the target.

The MMP missile can hit targets to a maximum firing range of 4,000m, allowing the operator to defeat the target beyond counter fire ranges. A dual mode seeker; uncooled infrared and visible color channels allows a broad range of targets to be engaged including those with low thermal contrast, a fiber-optic data link making it possible to maintain “man-in-the-loop” control to allow third party designated targets to be engaged outside the launch platforms line of site. The missile’s multi-purpose lethal package (anti-tank, anti-personnel and anti-structure) can defeat targets ranging from heavy tanks with reactive armour to infantry entrenched within structure.
