The Ministry of Defence is not in favour of a parliamentary delegation visiting Ladakh, citing the tense situation at the borders.

Sources said it has been communicated that troops from both sides are still in close proximity and that army is ensuring full preparedness, and in such a situation, it is not advisable for the parliamentary panel to visit.

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) was expected to visit Ladakh on October 28-29 but the dates have been rescheduled to November 8-10.

The communication also said that the parliamentary delegation can visit once there is some level of de-escalation and disengagement.

It may be noted that there has been no easing of tension despite military talks and the standoff has been going on for nearly six months.

The Public Accounts Committee wanted to get a sense of the situation regarding winter clothing and equipment for high altitude areas since it is examining a CAG report on the shortage of such items.

Addressing the Indian Army brass in New Delhi on Wednesday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Indian troops are standing firmly against China. He also added that talks for peaceful resolution of the crisis will continue.

Talking about equipping the troops to take on all challenges he said: “It is our national responsibility to ensure availability of best weapons, equipment and clothing to our troops braving extreme weather and hostile forces to defend our territorial integrity.”

He also complimented the efforts of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) working under difficult conditions to connect far-flung areas so that our citizens living in those locations are connected and facilitate faster development, an Indian Army statement said.

India and China have had seven rounds of talks at the corps commander-level but there has been no breakthrough to find a solution. Another round of discussions is expected to be held soon.

There was a proposal discussed to ensure a mutual disengagement in the previous talks, but the modalities have not been put out by either country. Sources say there are several differences that need to be ironed out before tensions can be eased.
