At least 30 people sustained injured in security forces’ action across Kashmir while shutdown continued on the 81st consecutive day on Tuesday.
On the call of joint resistance leadership, city markets opened after 6 PM while private vehicles flooded the streets including Lal Chowk, the commercial hub. As many as 89 people including two cops have been killed in the past 81 days of agitation triggered by the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.
At least a dozen people were injured when government forces tried to foil a pro-freedom rally in Kanelwan village of Bijbehara in Anantnag district. The forces also set ablaze the paddy harvest and damaged electricity transformers.
Reports said a pro-freedom rally cum unity conference of various sects (Itihad-I-Milat) was scheduled at Kanelwan village. “The forces had erected barricades and laid spools of concertina wires in various villages of Dachnipora to prevent people from marching. However, as people resisted and tried to organize the rally, forces resorted to baton charge, lobbed tear shells and used pellet guns,” witnesses said.
“More than 12 people were injured in the forces action - two of them with pellets.” The forces, locals alleged, went on rampage in Kanelwan as well as adjoining Sundpora village by barging into houses, beating inmates including women and children, vandalizing property and damaging doors and windows. “Five electricity transformers were also damaged by the forces with bullets,” locals said. They said that the forces even set ablaze the harvested rice.
“Whatever little we harvested this year was destroyed by the forces within no time,” said a farmer Ali Muhammad.
Meanwhile, defiant people again assembled at the venue and held the rally at around 3:30 PM.
A women’s rally was held in Nikas-Adbal in Pulwama district. Two more huge women pro-freedom rallies organized by Dukhtaran-I-Milat (DeM) were held in Tral town and Dadsara village of Tral. “Women in large numbers amid pro-freedom slogans took a procession from Darul-uloom to Khanakahi Faizpanah,” reports said.
Another women rally was held in Bugam village of Kulgam district. Late evening reports said that at least 15 people were injured in the protests that erupted after forces raided Sambora village of Pampore. “SOG and army raided the villages, vandalized property triggering massive protests,” witnesses said. They said forces lobbed shells and fired pellets to quell the protesters resulting in injuries to at least 10 people. “Three of the injured have been referred to SDH Pampore,” reports said.
One of the seriously injured youth was identified as Javaid Ahmed Dar, who was referred to SMHS hospital in a critical condition.
Family of an elderly private school teacher from Parguchi, Shopian, have accused the forces of detaining him during night raid without any reason. “On the intervening night of September 24 the forces raided our house, ransacked it and later detained my father Abdul Qayoom Dar,” said his son. He said that at the time of raid, he was outside state and only his mother and two sisters were at home. Dar, aged 51, is working in Sun Shine School under Falah-I-Aam Trust in Pinjoora village.
Reports from Srinagar district said that evening clashes erupted in Batamaloo, Ganderpora Eidgah and Nawakadal areas. On the relaxation call given by the joint resistance leadership, city markets witnessed evening business activities.
Shopkeepers and their salesmen said that they are gradually becoming habitual of this new routine. The markets also re-opened in Shaher-e-Khaas in evening and good number of shoppers was seen.
Reports said forces allegedly raided Wakura area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district where youth were preparing for Ithad-e-Millat conference scheduled to be held in the village tomorrow. Locals accused police for creating havoc in village after they entered and dismantled tents, beat youth to pulp and ransacked several houses. Youth pelted police with stones in reply to which police resorted to tear smoke shelling and aerial firing in which 10 people were reported injured. Police also arrested four youths from the area. Earlier, few youths threw stones towards the police deployment and tried to create disturbances at Qamaria stadium where the physical test of SPO recruits was taking place. Men and women in large number held a strong protest rally in Manigam and shouted pro-freedom slogans, reports said. The protest rally later dispersed peacefully.
Police version: According to a statement issued by police, the situation remained by and large normal and peaceful today although a couple of stray stone pelting incidents were reported. According to the statement, an incident of arson was reported from Kulgam this afternoon. “Miscreants in their attempt to disturb the situation set on fire a Panchayat Ghar at village Kujar in district Kulgam,” it said. The statement said that in its continuous efforts to curb the activities of trouble mongers police arrested 51 miscreants during past 24 hours.
