WASHINGTON and HELSINKI — A Danish government committee is expected to recommend Denmark buy Lockheed Martin’s F-35 to replace its aging F-16 fighter jets, according to press reports and sources familiar with the matter.

During a May 12 announcement, Denmark’s steering committee will likely recommend Denmark buy 24 to 30 F-35s for its next-generation fighter fleet, Denmark’s TV2 News first reported Wednesday. The Danish parliament will then have a period to review the recommendation before making a final decision.

If parliament approves the decision, Denmark would be the 11th country to buy the fifth-generation fighter jet, joining the US, the UK, Australia, Turkey, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Israel, South Korea and Japan.

The F-35, along with Saab’s Gripen NG, Eurofighter’s Typhoon, and Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet were all invited by the Danish military to compete for the award.

Denmark has eyed a replacement for its F-16s for years. The competition was in its early stages in 2010 when economic woes forced the government to pause the program. It was officially re-launched in 2013, but with a reduced buy — 30 fighters instead of 48.

Really....Against who will they use it....They are pretty much safe and have no direct threat from any country.

I don't know that Denmark has a problem with Russia. Latter is quite far away and does not share any borders with Russia.

All Scandinavian countries were considered a threat during the cold war, the soviets used to fly bombers in around their airspace.

March 1957, Nikolai Bulganin warned Denmark that if they used their bases against the Soviet Union it would be suicide for Denmark.[23] Bulganin said "If war is opened against the U.S.S.R., the annihilating power of modern weapons is so great it would be tantamount to suicide for foreign countries the size of Denmark. You are right but cold war is over. Germany is importing gas from USSR and Russia is no mood to keep a standstill with EU. By the way, in case of any war with Russia, F-35 does not offer much protection against Russia.

Look at relations now it's not going to great between Russia and the EU/NATO, yep I agree the Russians would make mince meat but there will not be a full blown war just war posturing like flying bombers and pissing of each other lol

No, cold war restarted with the Russian invasion of Crimea.
