WASHINGTON and HELSINKI — A Danish government committee is expected to recommend Denmark buy Lockheed Martin’s F-35 to replace its aging F-16 fighter jets, according to press reports and sources familiar with the matter.
During a May 12 announcement, Denmark’s steering committee will likely recommend Denmark buy 24 to 30 F-35s for its next-generation fighter fleet, Denmark’s TV2 News first reported Wednesday. The Danish parliament will then have a period to review the recommendation before making a final decision.

If parliament approves the decision, Denmark would be the 11th country to buy the fifth-generation fighter jet, joining the US, the UK, Australia, Turkey, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Israel, South Korea and Japan.
The F-35, along with Saab’s Gripen NG, Eurofighter’s Typhoon, and Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet were all invited by the Danish military to compete for the award.

Denmark has eyed a replacement for its F-16s for years. The competition was in its early stages in 2010 when economic woes forced the government to pause the program. It was officially re-launched in 2013, but with a reduced buy — 30 fighters instead of 48.
