Caste is nowadays seen in marriages. Still resistances are there against love marriages, but rarely does it end in murder. The last one was a Dalit boy with a BC girl and it happened in Dharmapuri. Every district some incidents happen, but it was not the same intensity 30 years ago. My hope is that in 15-20 years caste will get eradicated in TN.

North India have more work to do in this menace.

it so happens that i agree with u word by word. except the timeframe when these scourge will end in TN. u see something which is propagated through centuries and ingrained in our minds will take a hell lot of time than 10 to 15 years. but u have more knowledge about our southern region n demography than me, hence, i ll take ur view on it.
regarding caste is seen in marriages, yes i'd agree, but those only in urban areas. in villages (like u said in the hindi belt), there are segregation in sources of water , schools, places of worship n even in ordinary chai wallahs who keep disposables as some ppl prefer not using the same cup that a dalit mite have used (but i think, hygene is also a perfect reason thoh). there are different ways of societies "insulating" them from dalits.
hope we see a better society in our lifetime. i see this social scourge as worse than communalism or corruption.

I have traveled extensively coastal regions of Tamil Nadu...they are really beautiful places and really beautiful people....in my travel I have never witnessed anyone being discriminated as Dalits in that area...even though there is caste system it is not open as in northern regions of India...Having said that this currently flood has affected everyone without discriminating in Cuddalore...So it is not correct to say only this community has been mostly effected....

its dissappointing to see respected members here brush aside reports of skewed relief works. why is it so hard to believe wats said in the OP ? after all, this has been happening for centuries. dalits cant enter high caste areas, cant access the water sources "belonging" to high caste ppl. some even cant be seen, or else our high caste brethren get polluted. these things are as old as history itself. now when the report says that the dalits cudnt attend the relief camp (which was inside the village: dalits stayed on the outside fringes-as always), whats there not to believe.
this ostrich kind of behaviour by our countrymen will ultimately coz our demise someday.
lets ask ourselves whether this report seems BS or whether there might be some truth which we ignore; otherwise our utopia of best n beautiful akhand bharat will take a hit.

How about converting those Dalit to Bhramin.. Just give them a Bhramin name and migrate them to some other state where they can start a new life as a Bhramin.
