Dalai Lama says he loves President Bush

The exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, the Dalai Lama, says he loves outgoing US President George Bush despite some of his disastrous policies.

"To be honest, some of his policies have been a disaster, but as a person, I love him, he is open, very truthful," the Dalai Lama told a press conference in Prague on Monday, adding, "At the first meeting, we were very close" from the start.

Bush received the Dalai Lama in the White House in October 2007, raising the Chinese government's anger.

The Tibetan leader also called on the international community to show firmness and a critical spirit when dealing with Beijing.

Earlier China postponed a European Union-China summit following the European leaders' contacts with the the Dalai Lama. China has been angered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy's plans to meet with the Lama. Sarkozy is scheduled to meet him next week during a visit to Gdansk.

China, which maintains close trade ties with the Western countries, has frequently accused the US and its European allies of hypocrisy and double-standard over a range of issues including Tibet, human rights and space technology.

The 73-year-old critic of Chinese policies seeks a 'meaningful autonomy' for Tibet, which China regards as an inseparable province. The Buddhist leader has lived in exile since 1959.
