A criminal case already dubbed “weird and bizarre” by authorities has taken a couple more strange turns.
A week after Yukai Yang was charged with trying to poison his roommate at Lehigh University, Northampton County prosecutors on Thursday accused the 23-year-old Chinese national of seeking to flee the United States by orchestrating his own deportation.
District Attorney John Morganelli did so as he confirmed his office is probing whether Yang also tried to poison a second Lehigh student, allegations that Morganelli said emerged after the Dec. 20 news conference announcing Yang’s arrest.
“That is in the early stages of investigation. It came to light essentially after the publication of these charges,” said Morganelli, who would not provide details.
