HYDERABAD, India An official says two southern Indian states have declared alerts and evacuated thousands of people as the region braces for an expected cyclone.
Andhra Pradesh state revenue minister Dharmana Prasad Rao says the air force and navy have been put on alert and at least 70,000 people have been evacuated from eastern coastal villages to safer places in Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
India's Meteorological Department says Cyclone Jal is expected to make landfall Sunday night and bring heavy rains and high winds to the area.
It says the storm has been weakening gradually, but with winds of 44 to 50 miles per hour (70 to 80 kph) it is expected to damage coastal huts, trees and power lines. It recommends that all fisherman stay out of the sea.
