WASHINGTON: The US has warned its citizens travelling to or residing in India during the upcoming Commonwealth Games of a threat of "terrorist action and violence" and asked them to "take care when travelling within Delhi".

"The US mission in India alerts US citizens travelling to or residing in India to safety and security issues related to the 2010 Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in New Delhi," a statement by the US state department said on Wednesday.

The Games will be held Oct 3-14 in Delhi.

The statement warned of a "worldwide caution" regarding the threat of terrorist actions and violence against US citizens and interests.

It, however, stated that the US government has no information on any specific threat of attack that any individual or group is planning to coincide with the Games.

The US asked all its citizens planning on travelling to India during the Games to be up-to-date with the travel alerts or security warnings issued by the state department.

American citizens were advised to monitor local news reports and think about their security when visiting public places, including religious sites, or while choosing hotels, restaurants, entertainment and recreation venues.

They were also advised to take care when travelling within Delhi.

"Special care should be taken when using public transportation or driving at night," it said.

It asked all US citizens "to be on guard against petty crime, pickpockets, and the theft of personal property on trains or buses".

Tourists were asked to be on alert at airports, train stations and tourist sites and be aware of "scam artists looking to prey on visitors".

The citizens were asked to enroll with the nearest US embassy or consulate through the state department's travel website.

In case of any emergency, citizens have been asked to call up the US embassy in New Delhi, the US consulate general in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or Hyderabad.

I would not think too much of this, rather im quite surprised the TOI is making a big deal of this. This is know as a Warden Message, all embassies have such systems. The US is by far the most advanced and not only is it timely it is a bit too "cautious" (for obvious reasons).

The US OSAC: Overseas Security Advisory Council works with in-country (RSO and CSO: Regional and Chief Security Officers) to conduct a risk assessment base on past events and predictable trends along with local intelligence.

Here are all the Warden messages issued by US Embassies at present:

In short, i would worry too much about this! It really is no big deal! It's called "Risk management" and "Threat Analysis".

alqaeeda and other terrorist organizations will try their best to create hostility between India and pakistan so that pakistan can withdraw its forces from talibani areas to Indian borders ..and this can bee achieved by launching large scale terrorist attacks on India creating much more drama and war scare!!

SYDNEY: Australia on Monday said there was a "high risk" of an extremist attack during the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, in a travel warning that follows a gun attack on tourists in the Indian capital.

"There is a high risk of terrorist attack in New Delhi," said the updated travel bulletin from Australia's foreign department.

"Australians in New Delhi should be aware that the Commonwealth Games will be held in a security environment where there is a high risk of terrorism," it added.

There will most likely be a terrorist attack.

Some journalists on tv before showed how easy it was to buy high explosives in India. 1 reporter was able to purchase a kit of advanced explosive with remote triggers etc out of the boot of a guys car and then was able to carry it in a suitcase through Indian security checkpoints while guards were distracted, he wasn't even stopped. Just walked through the main gate.

Delhi is on high alert (and so is Mumbai).

The government has promised unprecedented security once the games dates come closer (that is when the movement of athletes and the audience including foreginers will be the maximum).

Indian army soldiers and special commandos will also be provided.

I have also seen news reports of what you described on TV and there was a special debate in Tv channels regarding it. ALso, there were no CCTV cameras found in specific spots. All this has been brought to the attention of Delhi police and they have done the needful.

Security will be increased slowly as the inaugural date nears.
