Cuba to join Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
HAVANA, Oct 14 (ACN)
Cuba announced today its decision to join the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), currently composed of 183 countries.
In keeping with the pacifist spirit of the Cuban people, we are in the process of consultation with the organizations involved to join the CTBTO, informed Elba Rosa Perez Montoya, Cuba´s Minister of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA), when she made a speech at a Workshop on Science and Scientific Diplomacy, held at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba.
She explained this treaty not only has technologies to detect nuclear tests, but also to prevent and warn about natural disasters, including earthquakes, so we can benefit from access to information, collaboration with other nations and strengthening the seismological early warning system, the minister said.
Perez Montoya assured that this is a demonstration of how science can be used for peaceful purposes, and regretted that not all governments profess such noble and constructive aims.
In this regard, the head of CITMA denounced the tightening impact of the US economic, financial and commercial blockade against her country nearly 60 years ago, which even goes as far as the persecution of each fuel ship.
Lassina Zerbo, CTCBO Executive Secretary, based in Vienna, Switzerland, said in the meeting that Cuba is a clear example of collaboration aimed at uniting nations against climate change, eradication of poverty and diseases.
