Samjhauta blast: charges framed against Aseemanand, 3 co-accused
A court here on Friday framed charges against self-styled godman Swami Aseemanand and three others in the Samjhauta blast case.
Aseemanand and his co-accused, Kamal Chand, Rajinder Chaudhary and Lokesh Sharma, will face trial under sections 120 (criminal conspiracy), read with 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous means), 327 (voluntarily causing hurt to extort property), 124a (sedition), 438 (punishment for the mischief described in section) and 440 (mischief committed after preparation made for causing death or hurt) of IPC, sections 150, 151 and 152 of the Railways Act, section 346 of Explosives Substances Act, sections 3 amd 4 of Prevention Damage of Public Property Act, section 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 23 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
The charge sheet in the case was filed in 2011, four years after the incident took place. Two suitcase bombs had burst on the Samjhauta Express, a twice-a-week train service between Delhi and Lahore, on February 18, 2007, killing 68 people.
On December 30, 2010, the National Investigation Agency claimed that they had solid evidence that Aseemanand was the mastermind behind the blasts. He had roped in Sandeep Dange, an engineering graduate, and Ramji Kalsangra, an electrician, to build the improvised explosive devices used in the blasts.
