Country facing subsidy, inflation burdens: Muhith
Finance Minister AMA Muhith said on Monday the country’s economy is facing problems of high inflation and rising subsidy burden.
“The high inflation is not simply induced by global inflation but also because of certain domestic policies,” he said while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a regional training workshop at a city hotel.
Bangladesh Bank (BB) in assistance with United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA) and The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) organised the programme.
On subsidy, Muhith said during the budget preparation, subsidy was projected at 2.7 percent of GDP (gross domestic product), but it is becoming higher.
He said the subsidy on increasing power production has helped achieve higher industrial output as well as economic growth.
Noting regular reporting on economic issues in the media, he called upon the civil society members to be cautious in making comments on economy issues.
