Countdown to India's big Agni leap begins

The only addition that A5 got over AIII is the extra composite stage on top and few modern electronics and back-up systems.

If an A-III can throw a weight of 2500kg to over 3500km,the addition of the 3rd composite stage will extend the range by over 2000km with same throw weight capability. Which means it can throw the same payload of 2500kg.

All this hulla-boolah about A-V test is only becos with reduced payload of 1000-1500kg, it can push the reach to almost 8500km.This is one reason why DRDO and journos keep saying it as an ICBM though a technical 5000km dont come under one.

With the current offerings from BARC an A-V can carry 3-5 petals of 250kt with ABM counter-measures depending on configuration and payload bus structure.

A-V test is so significant such that it validates the systems that goes into K-4 for MIRV and the all new composite motor.

If successful, Agni-VP will sport all 3 composite motors in the next tests.This further increases its range and payload or decreases its foot-print for same load capability.

AFAIK, the new composite motor will be base for the next generation of tactical missiles that will replace Prithvi series as well.

DRDO is certainly on a new ballistic trajectory as far as missile development is concerned. In the next 7-8 years we will see atleast 10 new missiles being developed and inducted including the much needed supersonic LACM and Nirbhay.

Agni-IV is completely a different system, while A-V uses the base A-III structure with 2m dia motor. The ventilated stage is taken care in A-V by the addition of extra stage and removal of ventilation between 1st and 2nd stage. This brings down the overall length of the missile. DRDO is standardizing systems on 2m base dia for both land and naval use.This brings up commonality of first and second stages ,if sub-launched variants are used.Its the same reason why K-IV uses the same 2m dia motors and K-VI SLBM(SLBM version of A-VI) too.

Same thing, when it comes to dual mode seekers.I talked about the progress of development of such for the phase-II ABM and later Brahmos variant's, when I first joined this forum. And many people( foreigners and desis)even trashed my sources.But now that its open in public domain, people are accepting it. :P

The thing is,

Untill couple of years back, India used to suck at developing seeker technology. And now almost 7 different seekers are in development with few already being developed, India leveraged the lost time with contemporary technology.

Be it active/passive for AAM/SAMs or mmW or laser/infrared/....... We are there when seeker technology and radar technology is concerned " Said a proud scientist at RCI".

This was only possible with the active private sector participation in high voltage projects. In the next couple of years say by 2014 we will be flying our own AESA radar for a/c.

It should be then launched and then even mentioned in any article man. That's the main thing. We won't stop the launch but delaying it is equally worse. We need to cover our entire threat theatre properly. Especially if the other entity has it covered well since last decade.

Just imagine Chinese PM is in India for any confference and India test fire a missile capable of hitting every major city in china. That's weird considering diplomacy isn't it ? Right now we are trying not to spoil relations with Chinese for no reason. That's it.
And as far as India is concerned in missile tech. We have proved ourselves. It's just matter of testing. But not at the cost of diplomacy. That's what I think. You are free to disagree. :) after all we all do have our opinions some aggressive and some moderate :)

Yes everyone knows that. It's political BS to keep it to 5000 km with increased payload. Anybody with average knowledge can tell you what will be its range if 1000 kg war head is attached. Just government don't want to express it anybody. Besides there is no intensional to attack USA or EU. It's prime interest is to answer the Chinese capacity to hit any Indian city. It's never was and will not be in near future design to hit NYC.

at the bold part.
nopes. the payload is reduced because an extra stage is added. and adding an extra stage will itself act as a payload for 1st and 2nd stage.

electronics guidance is from A4, which will make the A5 more accurate and mechanical structure is from A3.
