Core of al Qaida is in Pakistan, says British PM

Monday, March 23, 2009
LONDON: Stating that the core of al Qaida has shifted from Afghanistan to Pakistan, UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown on Sunday said that Britain was about to take the war against terror “to a new level”.

Britain will release on Tuesday a new counter-terrorism strategy called Contest Two, billed as the most comprehensive approach to tackling the threat of terrorism by any government in the world.

Writing in The Observer, Brown said: “We know that there is an al Qaida core in northern Pakistan trying to organise attacks in Britain. We know also that there are a number of networks here.î

“Al-Qaida terrorists remain intent on inflicting mass casualties without warning, including suicide bombings.

They are motivated by a violent extremist ideology based on a false reading of religion and exploit modern travel and communications to spread through loose and dangerous global networks.”

Al Qaida is still active in Afghanistan, but the threat has crossed the border, he said, adding: “Over two thirds of the plots threatening the UK are linked to Pakistan.”

“Together with the US administration we are developing a new strategy for how we tackle the terrorist threat across the region, the underlying causes, the extremist Madrasas and the lawless spaces in which terrorists can recruit or train.”

Big deal. Who cares what the irrelevant British PM has to say? Haven't we heard such rhetoric before? This guy actually has the nerve to point with fingers whilst 99% of the problems in the world today exist due to British colonial rule. Every conflict in the world today can be traced back to the evil British empire. The British empire seized to exist the day when it got reduced to a tiny island. Enough said.

Gordon brown the tosser is going to get kicked out in the next elections......the anti terrorist laws the labour govt bought in have been used on icelandic banks and mothers sending there kids to the wrong school.
Total and utter BS.

Mods, I really don't know, but then it would be nice reading your comments as well.
Most of the threads are getting a bit too monotonous.
TQM Plz. ;)

Ohh god how can british join Indian Propoganda.....I think RAW must have role to play in this too.......:rofl::rofl::enjoy:

Don't try and lump the British in with the sorry faced nonsense uttered by your home minister and foreign minister.

The GoI continues to spout bald faced lies without evidence about Pakistani institutional involvement, negating the conclusions of their own evidence dossier.

The Brits have not done that.

And lets not troll- constructive comments only please - as you can see your wonderful comment here started a tangential argument.

Al-Qaida is produced by America,

but now U.S.A want to eliminate it.

Though I don't Recognize of terrorist action

Lets also not forget why the core of Al Qaeda may be in Pakistan - the blame does not lie entirely with Pakistan.

The situation we see now in the Afghanistan and Pakistan is due to the confluence of various factors, not least of which was the Cold War between the Soviets and the US.

The stage for further interference in Afghanistan was set even earlier however, with the Afghan's own irredentist dreams, hostility and support for terrorism in Pakistan, egged on by the Indians, and later the Soviets.

The root of the Indo-Pak dynamic in Afghanistan of course leads back to Kashmir, and Nehru's reneging on his commitments to Pakistan and the UN, and the subsequent hostility that has characterized the relationship ever since.

Despite the apparent animal manure coming out of Gordon Brown's *** hole of a mouth, we must analyze such statements carefully...let there be do doubt that Pakistan is actually the Western world's focal point on this self created war on terror, and that in my opinion 2 events will happen in chronological order:

1. Increased funding and aid to Pakistan to combat its internal problems caused by the illegal occupation of the country next door, with new barbed wire strings attached.

then

2. A broad attempt to inflict serious destabilization to Pakistan will have paid off, giving legitimate reasons and clear mandates to install more puppets and moles in our government or to actually take control of the country by physical presence, possibly after a well rehearsed 9-11 type event in some western nation (operation Mumbai failed) with strong links to Pakistan.

The case is being built up against Pakistan for serious action, and it is well past its infancy.

Are you really that daft enough to believe that all these terrorist events are "staged" as some sort of a concerted ploy to 'tarnish the image of Pakistan'? There are a few inherent flaws in this cockamamie thought process.
1. Conspiracy theories are stupid to begin with.

2. The assumption is that all these nations who engage in self mutilation just to slander Pakistan have nothing better to do; a laughable thought really when you look at the ground reality. Even India, one of the poorest and most decrepit nation-state in recent history has finally come to its senses and reoriented itself to get on that arduous long term path of economic growth to fuel its social stability and perhaps provide a better future for the generations to come. You'd have to be a complete moron to believe that any of these people have the time or the requisite feasibility to engage in a destructive string of "black ops" just to checkmate Pakistan at some grand PR stunt.

3. You would also then have to assume that Pakistan is somehow worthy of all of this morbidity and mortality, which is obviously not the case. If anything, the problem is that nobody in the world cares about Pakistan, including successive Pakistani establishments. The clusterf**k we see today is the result of one too many delusions of grandeur and large scale miscalculations on account of gross negligence. The only reason Pakistan finds itself in the news now is because of the threat it's unmanageable land poses to the interests of other more prosperous states.

General response:
Almost every nation in the world is burdened with serious problems; more so among underdeveloped societies which were ambiguously cut up and given a new identity (nation-state) based on a foreign concept brought on by occupiers and colonizers. This however cannot be helped or changed, and its virtually pointless to hold on to all of these grievances to justify a string of horrible failures. Also at the end of the day, the leadership of the nation is held responsible for what emanates from their administered area (good or bad). Pakistan is the epicenter of terrorism today because the rancid ideology that fuels it gets a lot of support among significant portions of the populace. And the only way out of this mess is to find creative solutions and commit to a long term process (as uphill a task as it may be) to negate the influence of the said toxic ideology. This movement should also first and foremost be fueled by an internal resolve (societal). Unfortunately the likelihood of anything of this sort happening remains nothing more than a pipe dream at this point. I must also say that even on this site, the ratio between posts engaging in ridiculous blame shifting conspiracy theories vs introspective ones with the intention of discussing and debating internal solutions is rather disappointing.

1. Conspiracy theories are stupid to begin with.

Nothing I said was a conspiracy, only in my second point did I state that it would be possible another attempt to tarnish the name of Pakistan via a terrorist job like Karachi or Mumbai could be a possibility to legitimize more drastic actions within Pakistan.

You'd have to be a complete moron to skip your history lessons when comparing such geo-political matters. Not everything is a haphazard random event that you can conveniently blame culture and religion for. Even India, the decrepit nation that you mention suffers from visions of grandeur and to this day exchanges fire with Pakistan along the LOC (something you would have no idea about no doubt being fed on a steady diet of filtered popular media), so it is not completely off base to assume that other nations engage in different types of war.

Grand PR stunt, you mean something like the Cold War? I am sure the millions of soldiers, engineers and politicians engaged in that standoff would beg to differ when you decide to label events in time as ''PR stunts''.

3. You would also then have to assume that Pakistan is somehow worthy of all of this morbidity and mortality, which is obviously not the case. If anything, the problem is that nobody in the world cares about Pakistan, including successive Pakistani establishments. The only reason Pakistan finds itself in the news now is because of the threat it's unmanageable land poses to the interests of other more prosperous states.

I will ignore your subtle yet blatantly visible attempt to undermine my country, but being the only Islamic state with a more than sizeable nuclear stockpile and as your respected military heads of authority openly convey, ''a military larger than ours'', Pakistan is indeed an enticing target for multiple entities and considering Pakistan's vast conventional capabilities, the best way to soften Pakistan up would be to make it busy on various fronts seldom seen in the history of conflict but nothing the 20th and 21st century doesn't know about. I wish nobody would care about Pakistan, that would be the best case, but somehow even for the smallest of incidents I see it in the news, and case after case is built up on why Pakistan should be the most focal point on the WoT and other ''anti terror'' BS agendas. The ''clusterFU** that we see today is the result of :

a). Colonialism
b). Cold War - entities responsible for this are your government and the Soviet Union (may it rest in pieces ;)).
c). natural enmity as a result of the above

When you call our land unmanageable, you fail to understand and remember the history of this area and the specifics of the treaties signed between the government and the people of this land. Currently the government is managing, but somehow the real threats to other prosperous neighbouring nations are coming from a country racked with unmanageable entities creating chaos and a general state of anarchy across the land and real and actual threats to others while being fueled by absolute idiots engaged in a giant goose chase. I don't need to be more specific I hope...*cough Afghanistan being screwed by ISAF and friends cough*.

This rancid ideology was mostly funded and directed by your nation to destroy a natural enemy of your government. Now that this ideology is footloose, said nation's panties are in a twist. Again I find nothing conspiratorial with regards to what I said, the real conspiracy emenates from your obvious blame shift and agenda centric arguments of a baseless, forgetful, and amateur in nature.

As you sow so shall you reap.

Hmmm.. Perhaps I misunderstood his post as I skimmed through. I thought he was referring to two potential scenarios being set up.

1. The US infuses Pakistan with aid and COIN capacity building in the hope that it will show results as a last ditch effort.

2. Set the stage for intervention in Pakistan if the last ditch effort fails, which would imply a fall of Pakistan to extremist elements (and by 'fall' I am not limiting the potential scenarios to the Government being overthrown).

I suppose the third, that KB might have been implying (I think), is if the Neo Con's still have grand plans of restructuring the Muslim world ala their invasion of Iraq ...

There's nothing wrong with this interpretation.
