Cooperation isnt loss of sovereignty
Says Indian high commissioner
The Daily Star | Breaking & Latest News from Bangladesh
STAR ONLINE REPORT
Bangladesh and India have to learn to work together, solve problems together, and cooperate together, Indian High Commissioner Pankaj Saran said at a meet-the-press in the capital on Wednesday. Photo: Star
The Indian High Commissioner here said Wednesday that cooperation between neighbouring countries like Bangladesh and India does not mean the loss of sovereignty.
When we cooperate on a certain set of issues, it does not follow that via this cooperation, we somehow sacrifice our sovereignty, Pankaj Saran said at a meet-the-press at Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka.
India respects the sovereignty, the territorial integrity and the independence of Bangladesh, he said.
Pointing to the fact that India and Bangladesh are neighbours, the high commissioner said: We are both here to stay. Neither of us is going anywhere. So, we have to learn to work together, to solve our problems together, and we have to cooperate together.
We both benefit from working together to maximise our gains and if we do this through a cooperative approach to problem solving, we both stand to gain.
Within this framework, I believe that there are a lot that we can do together, Saran further said.
