ROME: Italian foreign minister Giulio Terzi on Monday warned of "considerable differences" with India over the alleged killing of two Indian fishermen mistaken for pirates by Italian soldiers on an oil tanker.

"There are currently considerable differences of a legal character. Up to now I have not seen the co-operation between India and Italy that would be desirable and would allow a quick resolution," Terzi said.

Italy says the men have immunity from Indian law as the tanker, the Enrica Lexie, was flying with an Italian flag in international waters as it sailed from Singapore to Egypt when the shooting occurred on Wednesday.

The two soldiers, who were deployed on the ship under a new law passed in Italy last year to protect against the growing threat from pirates in the Indian Ocean, were produced before a magistrate in Kerala on Monday.

They were escorted off the vessel and arrested on Sunday.

Italian officials have said the Indian fishing boat behaved aggressively and was repeatedly warned by officers on board the ship before shots were fired.

But India has protested against the deaths of the unarmed men and said that the suspects must face justice in local courts.

Is that what is called...."chori aur fir sinajori"..?

Let law take its own course.

My personal feeling is that even if the shooting happened in international waters, which is yet to be proved, it should not be a license to kill innocent people.

Also, why I feel that the story would have been quite different if it had been a bunch of white guys among those dead.

This case will be very important in setting a precedent.

Its a one off case .I think its better to downplay the incident , i am sure no one did it on purpose ... no personal vendetta or enmity that led to this ...

what about those two lives?....as jacksparrow said it would have been different if those were whites.

An unfortunate incident at best. But no hope is lost till the time Justice/ legal requirements are met in dealing with the case.

Enmity might not be the case.

But ,who's to say that a few drunk people with guns in their hands didn't just say to themselves, "HEY! Let's have some fun with these niggaz."

Could any one tell me how is it going to differ. if it is proved that the incident really happened in international waters ??

Well, then, according to international law, Indian courts will have no jusridiction to try these guys.

But I don't think the Indian govt. will let them go over this small technicality.

All eyes are now set on the pathetically slow Indian judiciary. Hope they don't give 'Tareekh par Tareekh' and get on with the trial.

One thing about the Italian shooters..they are not under the command of Captain or the Shipping Company. So there is no clarity who will pay compensation to the family of the dead fisherman.

I agree with you that law must take its course , However We should not let things get blown out of proportions ,we have seen that happen in the past . Else it will end up being penny wise pound foolish.

All I'm saying is that law must take its own course.

Even if that means prison time for these guys.

Bull crap! The shooting happened 40 Km off-cast Kochi port. That is damn well within our territorial waters. The two trigger-happy lunatics are going to pay for their callousness. Italians must first realize that we don't appreciate this kind of an attitude; first doing something wrong and then getting away with it.
