Punjab government’s Mi-17 helicopter crash lands in Afghanistan’s Logar province
Taliban sets it on fire; some reports say it caught fire as it crashed
7 crew members on board survive crash; Taliban takes them hostage
Foreign Office trying to contact Afghan officials to get more information
There were conflicting reports on how the helicopter caught fire. Some eyewitnesses told local news agencies that the helicopter appeared to have caught fire during landing while some residents said the Taliban set it on fire.

According to DawnNews, all seven crew members survived the crash. Six members of the Punjab government and a Russian engineer were on board the helicopter, it added.

Pakistan Foreign Office is trying to contact Afghan officials to get more information on the incident.

The Taliban militants group, however, has so far not commented on the incident.

There is a Russian engineer onboard too. This is turning out to be thoroughly disappointing.

What was Punjab govts helicopter was doing in Afghanistan?....I did not know that Punjab's boundaries expanded till Afghan border.

The news is verified. The Heli belongs to Punjab Government (CM) that was en-route to Russia for repair work and the same was reported few days back as grant is allotted as well. Appears to be not a good choice of such rout.

The Heli was going to Russia for repair and overhaul via authorized Afghanistan route.

If it was going for repairs, then why was it being flown...I mean that would be highly risky and also above Afghanistan??

The authority that decided to take it by flying would be aware of such difficulties/technical faults otherwise wouldn't risk precious lives. However, details to be followed.

I think from now on, all our low flying civilian air traffic needs to be escorted by PAF over Afghan air space. The Afghans cannot secure their airspace, we need to do it ourselves.

The "competent authority" failed miserably with 7 people under Taliban custody, a burnt helicopter and an international embarrassment that can further result in severing the already strained relations.

Slap on indiots faces who used to say Afghan Talibitches are our friends.
If they return our people safely then of course they are not our enemies. Definitely a helicopter landing in their area would provoke a reaction as we had taken Kabul into confidence and got their permission but the people on the ground (i.e Talibans) were not onboard. I hope the situation can be diffused peacefully and people return safely but I think we have lost an expensive machine.

I doubt that Helicopter did crash landing due to technical glitch.
Most probably it fell prey of Taliban rocket and was forced to crash land.
Lets hope for safe and sound return of crew. ..................
