Syrian government condemns U.S. Embassy move to Jerusalem: SANA

BEIRUT (Reuters) - The Syrian government on Wednesday condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize the city of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to move the U.S. Embassy there from Tel Aviv, Syrian state news agency SANA said.

“(The move) is the culmination of the crime of usurping Palestine and displacing the Palestinian people,” SANA said, quoting a Foreign Ministry source.

Turkey condemns 'irresponsible' US recognition of Jerusalem as Israeli capital

Turkey has condemned the "irresponsible statement of the U.S. administration" recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

A press release by the Turkish Foreign Ministry read: "We condemn the irresponsible statement of the U.S. Administration that we learnt with great concern, declaring that it recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and it will be moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem."

"This decision is against international law and relevant U.N. Resolutions, as the annexation of Jerusalem by Israel has been rejected by international community and the U.N."

The statement added that "Palestinian question can only be settled through the existence of an independent, sovereign and contiguous State of Palestine based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital."

"Attainment of independence by Palestine is a historical, conscientious and humanitarian obligation. Turkey will continue to advocate this."

France condemns US' 'regrettable' decision
PARIS

France "does not approve" the U.S' "regrettable" move in recognizing Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, French President Emmanuel Macron said Wednesday.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday officially recognized Jerusalem as capital of Israel. Trump also instructed the U.S. State Dept. to “begin preparations” for the American embassy in Israel move to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv.

Speaking at a news conference in Algiers, Macron said: "It is a regrettable decision, which France does not approve [of] and which contradicts international law and UN Security Council resolutions."

"The status of Jerusalem is a matter of international security that concerns the entire international community. The status of Jerusalem must be determined by Israelis and Palestinians in negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations," Macron added.

The French leader recalled "the commitment of France and Europe to the two-state solution, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security in internationally recognized borders with Jerusalem as capital of the two states."

Macron called "for calm, appeasement, responsibility from all parts" and said his country "is ready to take all the useful initiatives".

Jordan Condemns Trump's decision on Jerusalem as Humiliation

As Palestinians continue to denounce the Trump administration's intention of recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, several Arab leaders have voiced their discontent with the move, which many fear will have dangerous consequences for the region as a whole.

In neighbouring Jordan, a major US ally in the Middle East, King Abdullah II told US President Donald Trump that recognising the holy city as Israel's capital would inflame Muslim and Christian feelings.

Canada distanced it's self from US move over Jerusalem

Statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs on the status of Jerusalem

News Release
From Global Affairs Canada

December 6, 2017 – Ottawa, Ontario - Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

‘‘Canada is a steadfast ally and friend of Israel and friend to the Palestinian people. Canada’s longstanding position is that the status of Jerusalem can be resolved only as part of a general settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli dispute.

‘‘We are strongly committed to the goal of a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East, including the creation of a Palestinian state living side-by-side in peace and security with Israel. We call for calm and continue to support the building of conditions necessary for the parties to find a solution.’’

United Nations Secretary General: 'There is no plan B on Middle East peace process'
UN Secretary General António Guterres tonight said there was no “plan B” for peace in the Middle East.

Mr Guterres said a two-state solution was key to bringing stability to the region, which has tonight been thrown into doubt after President Trump declared Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Amid mounting condemnation from across the globe, Mr Guterres said: “From day one as Secretary-General of the United Nations, I have consistently spoken out against any unilateral measures that would jeopardize the prospect of peace for Israelis and Palestinians.

“Jerusalem is a final status issue that must be resolved through direct negotiations between the two parties on the basis of the relevant Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, taking into account the legitimate concerns of both the Palestinian and the Israeli sides.

“I understand the deep attachment that Jerusalem holds in the hearts of so many people. It has been so for centuries and it will always be.

“In this moment of great anxiety, I want to make it clear : there is no alternative to the two-state solution. There is no Plan B.

“It is only by realizing the vision of two states living side-by-side in peace, security and mutual recognition, with Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and Palestine, and all final status issues resolved permanently through negotiations, that the legitimate aspirations of both peoples will be achieved.”
