ANKARA, Turkey — More than a hundred defense and defense-related companies applied to have their production or research units at a planned aerospace industrial zone near Ankara, Turkish officials said.

The Ankara Aerospace Specialization Industrial Zone aims to generate $2 billion annually. It will be built on a land near Kazan district in Ankara, close to where Turkey's aerospace powerhouse, Tusas Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI), is located.

Bilal Aktas, head of industrialization department at the procurement agency, the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM),

told reporters that 104 companies made formal applications to have their units at the planned industrial zone. They have demanded a total of one million square meter of office space.

Turkey aims to make the zone a regional aerospace zone. A total of 10,000 people would be employed at the site.

Aktas said the venture aims to boost local aerospace companies and to bring them together with foreign partners with the aim of "creating synergy."

The aerospace zone will be run by a joint venture company owned by SSM, the Ankara Chamber of Industry and Defense Industry Manufacturers' Association.
