GHALLANAI: An important militant commander and his five accomplices from the Safi Tehsil in the Mohmand Agency surrendered to the political administration in the presence of a Jirga here on Thursday.
We joined the Taliban for the cause of Islam and with good intention, but now, we repent the decision after seeing our tribal women and children in distress and hapless at the relief camps, Chakari said while speaking on the occasion. He sought forgiveness for his actions assured the administration of his full support.
The elders of the Safi tribe handed over the local militant commander, Yar Said alias Chakari, and his five companions Tariq, Usman, Hussain Shah, Muhammad Ishaq and Gul Zameen to the political authorities.
The surrendering militants pledged to renounce militancy and promised that they would live in peace and not indulge in criminal activities. They also handed over their weapons, including LMGs, rockets launchers and mortars, to the authorities.
Chakari, who belongs to the Safi Tehsil, is reported to be one of the five important commanders who have surrendered to the authorities. A source, who wished not to be identified, told The News that another important commander of the Mohmand-based Taliban, Sangeen, would also surrender to the political administration soon.
Addressing the Jirga, Political Agent Amjad Ali Khan lauded the efforts of elders of the Qandhari tribe for peace and curbing militancy. He termed the surrender of the militants a major breakthrough and announced amnesty for them and all those militants who would lay down their arms in future.
