Top U.S. Commander in Afghanistan Is Fired

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced yesterday that he had requested the resignation of the top American general in Afghanistan, Gen. David D. McKiernan, making a rare decision to remove a wartime commander at a time when the Obama administration has voiced increasing alarm about the country's downward spiral.
Can someone explain to the readership the discrepancy as noted? How is it possible for McKiernan to meet with Kayani when McKiernan was relieved of command back in May, 2009? Keep in mind that the dailytimes.com.pk claimed to be the 'leading' news source for Pakistan. Kinda hard to be 'leading' when you are months behind. Or is there another General McKiernan in the US military somewhere that Robert Gates sacked?
