RAWALPINDI - Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani has reduced the service tenure of officers serving as brigadiers and colonels by one year while the service tenure of majors has been increased by two years.

According to reports, the COAS gave approval to the amendments in the service rules and issued order which would come into force with immediate effect.

Some 300 officers of the Pakistan Army serving as brigadiers and colonels will retire one year earlier.

The tenure of brigadiers will now be thirty years, of colonels twenty seven years. The service of major-ranked officers was increased to 25 years.

The new service order would help overcome the shortage of field officers. Most of the field positions and situations are held by majors while colonels and brigadiers hold commanding positions.

While it is internal issue of Pak & the PA some things seem strange unless I have got it wrong.

From what I have understood Brigs & Cols retire one year earlier than before while Majs retire two years later.

Firstly, suddenly asking a man to go home earlier when his liabilities are at the highest does not make sense.

Once a Maj is overlooked for the next rank he should after a point leave his combat unit coz someone junior to him would soon be the CO. Where does he then fit in ? and what would be his motivation level in peace time ?

BTW at what age would a Govt servant retire and in comparison when does a Service Officer retire ?

How do these retirement ages of the Army compare with the AF & Navy ?
