CNN launches journalist award for India and Pakistan

Thursday August 23, 2007

To mark the 60th year of Independence, international television network CNN has launched the CNN Journalist Award for India and Pakistan. Journalistic work in print, television and online media in India and Pakistan, focusing on actors of social development, will be taken into consideration for the award.

CNN New Delhi bureau chief Philip Turner said, "The award salutes insightful Indian and Pakistani journalists and their efforts in voicing often unpopular issues and concerns." The fifth edition of the CNN Young Journalist award was also launched on Wednesday. Open to journalists in the 22-28 age group in India and Pakistan, this award is meant to give an impetus to works by young professionals. This year, CNN has also introduced a new category to honour photo journalism. "The award recognises the contribution photo journalists have made to this industry in India and Pakistan," he said.

The organisation will continue with the CNN Aspiring Journalist Award and the CNN Citizen Journalist Award, introduced in 2006. The Citizen Journalist Award is supported by private television network CNN-IBN. Suhasini Haidar of CNN-IBN said, "Our viewers have become real resources pitching in with videos, photos and reports on breaking news, even before our correspondents can get there."

Entries are invited from print, television, online and photos. All entries are eligible except those from journalism students. The entries should be published or aired between January 1 and September 30, 2007. Entrants to the CNN-Aspiring Journalist Award have to submit an essay in 1,000 words on "Has the media broadened its reached only to narrow its focus?" The deadline is October 12, 2007.
