* Shahbaz Sharif pledges 100% literacy rate in 5 years

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shahbaz Sharif on Wednesday vowed to generate 1,000-megawatts electricity within one year. He said that the Punjab government would have to take the lead for rapidly progressing in the energy projects and find ways to generate electricity through alternate sources.

He was addressing the meeting of Punjab Energy Council with regard to the progress on energy projects. The meeting gave formal approval to the summary of establishing a separate secretariat for the Punjab Energy Council.

He said that generation of energy was of great importance for development. He further said that there should be a target of generating 1,000MW electricity within the next one year and all departments concerned should work round-the-clock for achieving this target.

Shahbaz Sharif said that the elimination of energy crisis was essential for accelerating the process of industrialisation, promotion of trade activities and strengthening of the economy. He said the promise of eliminating load shedding made by the PML-N with the people would be fulfilled at every cost.

He said, “We have to work keeping in mind the target of 1,000-megawatt electricity production within a year.”

Shahbaz Sharif said that a number of national and international companies were willing to install projects for generating electricity. Therefore, an incentives model should be prepared for generating energy through alternate sources.

The CM, while giving approval to a separate committee for running the affairs of Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park in Cholistan, said that the NTDC should be directed to immediately start work of laying the transmission line from Quaid-e-Azam Solar Park to Yazman.

Furthermore, Shahbaz Sharif has pledged to attain 100 percent literacy rate in the province within the next five years “100 percent literacy rate is a challenge which will be met as a national obligation,” he added.

He said this while presiding over a high level meeting for reviewing the implementation of the Punjab School Reforms Roadmap Programme.

The CM said that the Emergency Enrolment Campaign had been launched throughout the province. He further said that admission of children in schools was being ensured during the campaign.

He said collaboration between the DFID of UK and the Punjab government in the education sector was yielding positive results. He said that besides education, working groups should be constituted between the Punjab government and DFID for the uplift of health and other sectors.

The CM said that the promotion of quality education for strengthening the economy and the rapid development of the country was of great importance and the government was attaching a high priority to education. He said that obtaining education was the basic right of every child and the government was providing this right. He expressed the hope that due to the steps taken by the government, no child would be deprived of the right of education.

Shahbaz Sharif directed that competent officers should immediately be posted on vacant posts on the basis of merit in the institutions related to education. He said that digital monitoring plan should be evolved for ensuring attendance of teachers in schools and no political or administrative pressure with regard to postings and transfers of teachers should be accepted.

He directed that an effective campaign should be launched for providing vigorous guidance to people regarding the Emergency Enrolment Campaign and elected representatives should also be included in the campaign.

British educationist Sir Michael Barber, while giving a briefing about the Punjab School Reforms Roadmap Programme, said that the Punjab government had implemented this programme in an effective manner. He further said that the government had also made tremendous progress in the education sector during the last few years. Various proposals regarding reduction in the dropout ratio of children and making the enrolment campaign a success were also discussed in the meeting. app
