The US Air Force (USAF) has chosen BAE Systems to provide aircraft survivability for its Sikorsky HH-60W Combat Rescue Helicopter, BAE Systems announced on 9 March.

The company will supply its Common Missile Warning System (CMWS) and its AN/DPX-7 Reduced Size Transponder (RST) for Identification Friend or Foe capability. A spokesman for BAE Systems declined to provide the contract value or production numbers at this time.

The transponder is currently on several manned and unmanned aircraft, including the MQ-4C Triton.

The USAF will deploy the CMWS Gen3 system that includes hostile fire indication and data recording capabilities to detect and evade small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades, according to BAE Systems. It also performs detailed post-mission analysis. The technology has amassed more than 2 million in-theater hours on more than 24 US Army types.

Late last year, Rockwell Collins was selected to provide avionics and mission equipment - including the cockpit flight and mission display system, navigation radios, and the advanced ARC-210 V/UHF communication system - for the HH-60W programme.

The USAF in 2014 selected Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin to replace its ageing HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters with a derivative of Sikorsky's Black Hawk utility helicopter. The USD1.3 billion contract awarded in June 2014 included funding for four engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) aircraft. Following completion of the air vehicle design review next month, the company is expected to receive funding for five system demonstration test articles. The air force has said that it wants a fleet of 104 aircraft. First flight is scheduled for 2019, and initial operational capability would occur in 2021 once there is one operational squadron and one training site in place.
