Clinton signals focused US attention on Pakistan’s economic stability
NEW YORK/WASHINGTON, Feb 14 (APP): In a sign of focused U.S. attention on Pakistan’s economic stability, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Friday praised Japan for its support in addressing economic difficulties confronting Islamabad as she underscored the Obama Administration’s desire to forge closer relationships in Asia. Speaking at the Asia Society, Clinton pledged United States’ wide‑ranging partnership with Tokyo and other Asian powers under the new Barack Obama Administration to ôpreserve peace and stabilityö throughout the continent.
“Japan is also to be commended on a bigger leadership role in addressing the economic crisis in Pakistan,” she said, ahead of her visit to far eastern countries that will also take her to Tokyo, which is planning a major conference on economic support for Pakistan.
Washington, she said, is also working with Japan to provide educational opportunities for girls in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
“We anticipate an even stronger partnership with Japan that helps preserve the peace and stability of Asia and increasingly focuses on global challenges from disaster relief to advancing education for girls in Afghanistan and Pakistan and to alleviate poverty in Africa.”
The chief U.S. diplomat said special envoy Richard Holbrooke’s visit to South Asia reflects the Obama administrationÆs focus on the region.
Clinton will begin her first overseas visit on Sunday that will take her to Japan, Indonesia, South Korea and China.
In addition to supporting Pakistan at Friends of Pakistan Forum, the United States is also in the process of enacting a legislation that would realize more than $1.5 billion assistance annually for the key South Asian country over a decade.
President Obama said this week that his administration wants to have Pakistan as a stalwart ally in the struggle against extremist violence along Pakistan‑Afghanistan border regions and vowed strong partnership with the country in a telephonic call to President Asif Ali Zardari.
