Since Netaji Bose was an illustrious political figure of pre-partition India I believe it is safe to discuss this topic here.

We all know who Bose was, what many might not know is that his disappearance still remains a mystery. Official record claims he died in a plane crash circa August 1947. But many people dispute that.

There are many theories in India that have been around for decades. Some presume he was arrested and handed over to Soviets where he died in prison. Some suggest he could not bear the burden of failure and lived a life of incognito in Singapore where he formed his army. Some suggest the British caught him and assasinated him in Che Guevara style. While some believe he managed to live in India under an alias and lived and died a quiet life.

Many people have claimed to have seen Netaji at places like Varanasi, Kolkata etc. But these have been discarded as wild rumours of no value.

Indeed there might be nothing mysterious about his disappearance. But what is intriguing public interest is the fact that so many decades after Indian independence the govt. has still not declassified the files on Netaji. What is so secretive information in those files? The PMO claims declassifying Netaji files might "compromise" national interests. Those are very big claims, how can the file on a freedom fighter compromise India?

I read an article once where a certain individual lived in a rented house under constant government security. The man was said to be very old and was never seen in public, in fact not even in the verandah. The curtains were always drawn and no visitors were allowed inside except very few government officials who made sudden, unexpected visits and left after an hour or so. No visitor was allowed to stay overnight.

The man lived like that for a decade and died unknown around 1987-88. Nobody till date knows who he was and why he was kept in so much secrecy.

There are allegations that Netaji's declassified files might put the "royal dynasty" of Indian politics under negative light. If that is the case then it is more urgent for the files to be declassified.
