St Joseph's Inter College. (Photo: stjosephlucknow.com)On her first day at the St Joseph's Inter College, on May 7, Farheen Fatima was not allowed to attend class as she wore a head scarf. Fatima,15, was told to spend the entire day in the school library. The next day too, when she once again wore her head scarf to school, she was told to sit it out at the library. The girl then called her parents, who first met the principal and then gave a written application to the principal that their daughter be allowed to attend school wearing a head scarf.

Despite the name, St Joseph's is not a Christian missionary school and is run by an Aggrawal. Explaining the school's stand, Principal N Emmanuel said on Saturday, "We follow a certain dress code and hijab is not a part of that code. We cannot make exceptions as it will compromise with the discipline of the institution." The parents say that, contrary to the principal's claims, they had informed the school that Fatima would be wearing a hijab to school.

"We had made it a point to draw the principal's attention to the fact that hijab was a must in our family, and in fact Farheen was wearing a hijab during her admission," the parents said.

After failing to convince the principal, the parents made a formal complaint to the UP Child Rights Protection Commission whose member Naheed Lari Khan visited the institution on Friday. "I spoke to several students of the school and it was evident that nobody expressed any reservation against a student wearing a hijab," Khan said.

"I therefore have reason to believe that the school management is discriminating against Farheen purely on religious grounds which is unlawful and unconstitutional," she declared. "I have urged the district administration to take suitable action against the school," she added. District magistrate Raj Shekhar said, "I have appointed a two-member committee comprising the district inspector of schools and additional city magistrate to look into the issue and submit a report by Monday, following which appropriate action would be taken."

that school has an uniform. Wear it. Students in childhood are made to wear those uniforms for a reason. It is because they all feel equal irrespective of their income levels and religious affinities and stuff.

If she wears a headscarf, she will be auto differentiated. kids would wonder about stuffs which they are not supposed to get into atleast till a certain maturity age.

what alternative case are you talking of ? Schools have uniforms and the reason for that I have amply made clear of in my earlier post. Learn to comprehend first.

If you would bother to put the depleted grey matter of yours to any use, you'll know that these Islamophobic schools never have any issues with students wearing skimpy or inappropriate clothes and yes all schools don't have uniforms, so try not to be fixated on uniform excuse.

Obviously, the school can't reject admission because the girl was wearing a hijab. But almost all schools have rules where they specify a uniform code. If the parents knew that and still admitted their girl into this school, how is it the school's fault? If its important to them, get your girl to a school where girls can wear a hijab!
