Cigarettes to be BANNED for people under 21 in new plans by MPs (UK)
04 March 2019 | https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/la...ain-mps-smoking-bob-blackman-health-secretary
THE legal age to buy cigarettes should be raised from 18 to 21, a group of MPs and peers has said.
Taxes on tobacco products should also be raised to reduce their affordability and put people off, the All Party Parliamentary Group on Smoking and Health said. Its chairman, Tory Bob Blackman, said: "Smoking remains the leading cause of premature death and health inequalities."
Other measures proposed by the group include spending more on educational campaigns and making manufacturers insert "stop smoking" cards inside packs.
Rules on smoking in TV programmes and films should also be tightened.
The group said that while the Health Secretary's commitment to fund stop-smoking services is welcome, treatment "is only part of the solution".
The British Lung Foundation's Penny Woods said: "Raising the age of sale from 18 to 21 will help stop experimentation from becoming a fatal habit and reinforce the dangers."
