Osama bin Laden's son-in-law Sulaiman Abu Ghaith was seized by CIA agents and taken to the United States after Turkey deported him to Jordan this month, a Turkish newspaper reported on Thursday.
Abu Ghaith, the former spokesman of the al-Qaida network, was seized last month at a luxury hotel in Ankara after a tip-off from CIA and was held there by the police despite a US request for his extradition.

Turkish authorities deported Abu Ghaith to Jordan on March 1 to be sent back to Kuwait but he was seized by CIA agents in Jordan and taken to the United States, the Hurriyet newspaper said.

His deportation coincided with a visit by US Secretary of State John Kerry to Ankara as part of a regional tour, it added.

The Turkish foreign ministry declined to comment on the report while the US embassy in Ankara told AFP: "We're aware of the reports."

Ankara considers Abu Ghaith a "stateless" person as he was stripped of his Kuwaiti nationality after appearing in videos defending the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States and threatening further violence.

The United States wanted him extradited over his alleged connection to the attacks.

He appeared in a propaganda video in the aftermath of 9/11, standing beside bin Laden, who was killed in May 2011 in Pakistan in a covert US operation.

Abu Ghaith was detained in Turkey after he allegedly entered the country illegally from Iran.

He was freed by an Ankara court because he did not commit any crime on Turkish soil and local media claimed Turkey had hesitated to extradite him to the United States fearing it could become a target of al-Qaida.

Former bin Laden spokesman in US custody

By THOMAS JOSCELYN, March 7, 2013

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith, a former spokesman for Osama bin Laden, was arrested in Jordan and is currently being held in New York City. Abu Ghaith was initially detained in Turkey, according to Reuters, and then deported to Jordan, where the FBI and Jordanian authorities took him into custody.

The Kuwaiti press first reported that Abu Ghaith had been freed from Iranian custody and traveled to Afghanistan in 2010. According to press accounts at the time, he was one of several al Qaeda leaders who was released in exchange for an Iranian diplomat who was kidnapped by al Qaeda's allies in Pakistan.

The details of this trade are not entirely clear.

It is known that the Iranians would not outright free some senior al Qaeda leaders from their custody, even while allowing others to operate a facilitation network. So, al Qaeda decided to force their hand by kidnapping and beating an Iranian operative doubling as a diplomat in Pakistan.

That deal was first reported by slain Pakistani journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad, who wrote about the exchange for the Asia Times and in his book, Inside Al-Qaeda and the Taliban. Shahzad, who was killed under mysterious circumstances in Pakistan, reported that the hostage exchange led to al Qaeda's "broadening [of] ties with Iran." Al Qaeda, according to Shahzad, also received more sophisticated weaponry from Iran as part of the deal.

According to some accounts, Abu Ghaith operated inside Iran since his relocation there after the Sept. 11 attacks, including in more recent times. He was first captured after leaving Iran for Turkey earlier this year.

In 2002, Abu Ghaith openly threatened additional mass casualty attacks on the US. "Al Qaeda has the right to kill four million Americans, including one million children, displace double that figure, and injure and cripple hundreds and thousands," Abu Ghaith said in an online statement.

In his autobiography At the Center of the Storm: My Years at the CIA, former CIA director George Tenet explains that the US government "had to consider the possibility that Abu Ghaith was attempting to justify the future use of weapons of mass destruction that might greatly exceed the death toll of 9/11."

The CIA and FBI investigated numerous leads, but no such plot was uncovered.

Ties to Faylaka Island attack

According to declassified and leaked Joint Task Force-Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO) documents, Abu Ghaith was tied to the al Qaeda terrorists responsible for a more conventional attack against American forces. On Oct. 8, 2002, an al Qaeda cell opened fire on US Marines conducting training exercises on the Faylaka Island off of Kuwait. One US Marine was killed and another seriously wounded.

The attack was carried out by al Qaeda trainees with direct ties to Abu Ghaith.

The leader of the Faylaka Island cell was a Kuwaiti named Anas al Kandari, who was killed during the shootout with the Marines. JTF-GTMO's files indicate that Anas al Kandari attended advanced sniper training at one of bin Laden's facilities in Afghanistan prior to the Sept. 11 attacks. Abu Ghaith, Fayiz al Kandari (Anas al Kandari's cousin) and some of bin Laden's sons were also allegedly part of the same training class.

In his book, The Martyr's Oath, Stewart Bell details how Abu Ghaith recruited and indoctrinated Anas al Kandari, as well as other al Qaeda recruits, in Kuwait. Fayiz al Kandari is a current detainee at Guantanamo and had his own ties to Abu Ghaith and bin Laden, according to the JTF-GTMO files.

Abu Ghaith's role in recruiting young Kuwaitis for al Qaeda eventually led authorities to strip him of his citizenship.

I wonder if he'll face **** meat sandwich the way Kumar and Harold did :cheesy:

I wonder what this guy was doing in Turkey. Especially Ankara - a sleepy city full of diplomatic and official buildings and not much else. If he supported 911 type thing then good riddance

By the way wasn't a bin laden niece taking refugee at Saudi Consulate in Iran (she still there?)

Big family. From what I understand most have disowned OBL. Wonder where this guy went wrong. AQ is more of an enemy of Muslims than non Muslims.

An organization in which many of the former "top brass" were once either warmly received or simply ignored by the aforementioned entity

Interesting turn of events

AQAP is much larger in size; it will be challenging to fully uproot their misguided ideology

Appropriate & more realistic title to all such developments would be:

"CIA disposing off it's assets after they've served their purpose -or- are no longer of any use"

That being said, let me predict something, Mushy-The-Traitor who has given like thousandth date of his much awaited return after he "Sab Say Pehlay Pakistan Say Bhaag Gaya" -&- Zardiri\Bhand-Bhai & such will also see their end in a way similar to Bainazeer\Zia-ul-Haq\Kazzafi\Husn-e-Mubarak\Osama\Seal-Team-Six\Kennedy\& those 3 who build Osama compound in Abbatabad on behalf of CIA & got killed on the day of the raid... etc etc etc...

Better question to ask was how many wives did OBL have? Or how many women did he bed? He'd have been better off if he had set up and run a factory for ME Viagra. Would have been still raking in the moolah and not have been turned into 'fish-food'.
Did the fish in the Arabian Sea enjoy their banquet? :azn:

hmm Turkey, releasing terrorists... Turkey released him to be sent to Syria, he went to Jordan to get prepared and ready, trained ??

and what is CIA doing in Jordan?
Oh I forgot, CIA is training terrorists in Jordan, to send them to Syria..
