The burial of actor Priyanka Chopra’s grandmother has stoked a controversy in the Jacobite Syrian Church in Kerala.

A day after the Church Synod divested its Kottayam Bishop, Thomas Thimothios, of all duties for facilitating the funeral of Chopra’s grandmother Madhu Jyotsna Akhouri, alias Mary John, the church head, Catholicos Baselios Thomas, nullified it Friday .

Holding that denial of a funeral is against Christianity, Bishop Thimothios had facilitated the burial at church cemetery at Ponkunnam, in Kottayam, last Sunday.
Akhouri, 93, died in Mumbai on June 3 and the body was flown to Kumarakam, Kottayam, two days later, as her family members wanted to keep her last wish: a funeral at Kumarakam church, where she was baptised as a child.

However, the local parish and its committee objected, contending that Akhouri was not a member of the church, as her name had been removed following her inter-caste marriage with Dr Akhouri. But, Bishop Thomothios intervened and allowed the funeral at another church cemetery.

What a cheap move on part of Church synod to go after the Bishop for facilitating the funeral for Priyanka Chopra's grandmother.

Ummm.

What worries me is that the world is running out of cemeteries.
Under such circumstances should they not be thinking of an alternate method of disposing dead bodies?
Recently I read an article about Parsis switching to electric crematoriums because there are no more vultures.

may be your thinking is...... Cemetry are housefull .. due to lack of space .. churches taking some decision like this..

. .
Issues: Who may receive a Catholic funeral? Who may be buried in a Catholic cemetery? May a Protestant funeral take place in a Catholic church?

Response: Any baptized Catholic in good standing has a right to a funeral within the Church and according to her liturgical practice. There are some people to whom the Church denies Catholic funeral rites. Additionally, there are some circumstances in which a Catholic funeral is allowed to a non-Catholic person. Similar guidelines apply to burial in a Catholic cemetery. Finally, given certain circumstances, a Protestant funeral may take place in a Catholic church.

As in the past, the Church teaches that suicide is and always will be objectively and gravely wrong. At the same time, today she better understands the psychological disturbances that may influence a suicide and thus mitigate personal culpability. This being the case, those who take their life are now typically provided funerals (cf. Catechism, no. 2282).

May divorced and remarried Catholics receive a Catholic funeral? As with persons who had committed suicide, persons who had remarried outside the Church were often denied a Catholic funeral. Again, this was to avoid giving scandal to the faithful and to prevent the faithful from taking the matter lightly. [2]

The Church now generally allows Catholic funerals and burials to those who have divorced and remarried. This discipline of allowing funerals does not change the Church’s doctrine: Divorce and remarriage without an annulment is and always will be objectively wrong. (For more on the Church’s teaching on divorce and remarriage, please see our Faith Fact on the subject.)

Nope I want to know why the bishop was removed in the first place?

Dont you really have another work apart opening threads to demean or blame Churches and Christians .. Church has every right to accept or deny, Church Cemetry are only for deceased members .. not to those who left Church and come back again for the final rites.. If sufficient space is there, then you can ask .

In arya samaj would anyone allow Marriage in Christian or Muslim style ???

.
While this is a mistake on the Church's part, I for one know that Syrian Churches follow an strict rules and regulations regarding their regulations. Even family members are disowned if they marry outside their Syrian counterparts even to another Christian. Attitudes must change.
And there is going to be no solution. There will no social media outcry for days, nor will Burqa Dutt or Arnab treat this is an issue (TBH its not an issue to be discussed at greater lengths, but again if the news is regarding Hinduism Never mind ;) ) and will be allowed to die an slow death. And no body will ever care.

Let's be honest. This issue would not have hogged the limelight if not for Priyanka Chopra. Lets replace Christianity with Hinduism in this issue. And what would have been the response from Indian netizens, from Congress high command to local NGO?
The Church in this case is wrong, and simple as that. No amount of defending will put that right.

How you are going to say wrong??? There is limited space for Cemetry .... Even within Christians many churches will not allow others within its cemetry... you have to understand there will be protest from Church members , If Church allow other than members..

He would have cried and whined like his usual self that he is victimized because he is a Christian.

Enter the dialy bread batch... lolz.. always on religious non sense.. these guys don't have anything to do but blame other religions..

Yet Hindus themselves recognized it as a stupid act and corrected it themselves. Those uncovering it, those reporting it and those stopping it were Hindus.

They did not defend the indefensible, like you fanatics do.
