NEW DELHI: An Indian military helicopter crashed late Wednesday in restive Kashmir killing two pilots, reports said.

The aircraft, identified as an Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), came down in mountainous Bandipore district, some 65 kilometres north of the Kashmiri summer capital Srinagar, killing a lieutenant colonel and a major, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

The chopper crashed about 30 minutes after it took off for a night training sortie from the army's aviation base at Manasbal.

There was no immediate reason given for the accident.

Rebel groups have been fighting Indian forces since 1989 for independence or to merge the territory with Pakistan.

The nuclear-armed neighbours have fought two of their three wars over the scenic region, while years of fighting have left tens of thousands dead, most of them civilians.

Something is seriously wrong with these Indian built helis

. . .
There have been 3 crashes in a short period.

Sometimes accidents happen. We've opeated 100s of them for decades. Till now there's no indication we have abnormal crash rates. This could be maintainence/ weather, any number of factors. And don't bring in Equador here, they've crashed 1/4 th of every single make of Help they've ever bought (including Bell etc.).

could have been caused by small arms fire by Kashmiri nationalist/freedom fighter groups....though these 'dhruv' aircrafts are known for horrible safety record. Several crashed in Ecquador and they're grounded. Turkiye interior ministry toyed with the idea of importing a few for trial purposes but that plan was cancelled given the poor safety record.

so who knows what happened.....i understand 2 endian officers (col, maj) were killed as per some source i read online i think it was on Dawn
