Chittagong Port is the 70th busiest container port in the world after it moved one notch up in this year's ranking of the Lloyd's List.

The 2018 edition of Lloyd's List's One Hundred Container Ports was published on Saturday and was based on the total throughput of containers in 2017.

The country's premier port handled 25,66,597 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers last year, up 9.36 percent from 23,46,909 TEUs in 2016.

The port was ranked 71st, 76th and 87th in the three previous editions.

Chittagong Port handles 98 percent of the total containerised goods transport in the country.

The increase in the country's foreign trade in recent years contributed to the higher growth in container handling through the port, said port users.

They underscored the importance of infrastructure development and logistics supply of the port to cope up with the increasing container transport. Chinese port Shanghai retained the top post. It has been maintaining the pole position since 2010.

The Port of Singapore and Chinese ports Shenzhen and Ningbo-Zhoushan held on their respective second, third and fourth position.

A total of 21 Chinese ports, eight US ports and seven Spanish ports made it to the ranking.

India's Jawaharlal Nehru Port secured 28th position, up from 33rd spot previously. Mundra was ranked 35th compared to 45th in the last year's ranking while Chennai dropped to 99th from last year's 93rd position.

Chittagong Port is ahead of Pakistan's Port of Karachi, which was ranked 83rd.

Mahbubul Alam, president of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said the port has moved up one spot but it could have been much better if the required equipment like quay gantry cranes could be installed much earlier and the port's infrastructure development could be fast-tracked.

“The country's export and import is on the rise, so there is no alternative to enhancing Chittagong Port's capacity and efficiency.” He said due to a lack of enough jetties and yards the port very often experiences container and vessel congestion causing sufferings to the businesses.

Alam called for speedy implementation of the projects such as Patenga Container Terminal, Laldia Multipurpose Terminal and the Bay Terminal.

Md Zafar Alam, member for administration and planning at the Chittagong Port Authority, said three new quay gantry cranes that arrived last week would be made operational this week.

As a result, container handling would be expedited, he said.

Port of Chittagong is the busiest port in the Bay of Bengal by far, which includes largest container handling capacity achieved. This includes any port in India's East coast and of course any other port in the Bay excluding Singapore.

Not true.. If one considers Singapore is in the Bay of Bengal, Then both Jakarta and Port Kelang is even more in proximity to the Bay of Bengal than Singapore and both are in the top 25 ports in the world forget about being top 100 even top 50 !!

Apples to oranges comparison. Transshipment ports like Singapore, Colombo etc. will always handle way more volume than source ports like Chittagong.

Not talking about Colombo or Singapore which are transshipment hubs and not comparable but about Port Kelang and Jakarta which are two of the top 25 ports in the world located in the Bay of Bengal region, Just nullifies another false proclamation as usual

Port Kelang in Malaysia is in Malacca strait, which is part of Andaman sea.And Jakarta port in in Java sea.Much much distant from the Bay Of Bengal both of these two, specially Jakarta port.

Five countries has coastline along Bay of Bengal, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. Malaysia and Indonesia are not part of it.

Well you can explain that to your counterpart Mr CGI .. No point blabbering to me, I'm quite aware of my geography.. He's the one who claimed Chittagong is the biggest port except for Singapore in the Bay of Bengal area.. If Singapore is included then both Jakarta and Kelang definitely are cos they're both more proximate than even Singapore.. Btw the graph above is only the top 25 not even top 50 ports so take a guess again

So if we go by your argument excluding Malaysia and Indonesia

Here is the top 50 ports list

http://www.worldshipping.org/about-the-industry/global-trade/top-50-world-container-ports

Laem Chabang, Thailand - 21

You and Mr. CGI both can do better with a little bit of knowledge an research, Before posting nonsense

Most people would be glad of development of you're country but then few of you Stronk brigade kids need to take it to another level of either making stupid lofty claims with little or no facts to back it up with or belittle another country with little or no relevance to the subject matter.. Hence the reason some of us need to correct some of the BS posted here and push down a dose of reality on you'll

Why are you posting top 50 port list? This opening post clearly says, Chittagong is 70th place.Has anybody claimed it to be within top 50?

Cos bub your fellow bongle stronk buddy as usual posted a BS claim of 70th ranked Chittagong port is the largest in the Bay of Bengal region, Which is as usual like most of his and your claims is false, Why ? Cos Laem Chabang Which is in Thailand and you painfully tried to say is indeed a country in the Bay of Bengal is ranked 21.. Thus yet again make the claim of Mr. CGI of Chttagong is the largest excluding Singapore Which he says is in the Bay of Bengal makes it just another joke.. Comprede ?

Or are you dislexic or lack comprehension to understand that simple fact ? Cos I can’t be bothered to explain further to retards

Laem Chabang port is in Gulf of Thailand not in Bay of Bengal. With these garbage posts you are exposing your ignorance one after another. I urge you not to take such unhealthy interests about proving certain member wrong here which in turn embarrass you only. You will gain nothing doing this mud-sliding here.

Cheap product, thus mass volumes + aided by being single port for an entire 170+ million ppl.

If you look at actual value of the shipping rather than the volume, CTG wouldn't even make top 200 port in all fairness.

Lol.. Mate the embarrassment is you and the rest of your coterie of Bongles stronk brigade, Do you realize how little of what you bunch post here has credence with other posters.. Ofcause when you lot live in a bog there is only mud for you to sling around

Now tell me do you also consider Singapore is part of Bay of Bengal region as your buddy Mr. GCI proudly proclaimed ?

Or do you not Consider Thailand is located in the region as you posted to sound too smart for your own good ?

Five countries has coastline along Bay of Bengal, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka

Either way your buddy Mr. CGI's claim of 70th rated Chittagong port as the biggest in the region has come a cropper and is bad as his sub standard CGI.... So either you prove his claim correct or STFU

He's just pissed off that nobody's talking about Colombo or Sri Lanka here and just had to mention it somewhere and thus all these shits.

Classic attention-seeker.

Either way - I believe the time when Chittagong shippers need to transship through Colombo is coming to an end soon.
