TAIPEI -- Three of the world's top five smartphone vendors will be Chinese companies by the end of 2014:D as they expand into new price bands and move aggressively to higher-end models, market research firm Gartner Inc. said Tuesday.

Gartner did not identify which three Chinese players would make it into the top five because there are several candidates to reach that level, including ZTE Corp., Lenovo Group Ltd., Huawei Technologies Co. and Xiaomi Technology.

Gartner's principal research analyst Jon Erensen told a local media briefing that seven of the top 10 smartphone vendors by 2016 or 2017 will be Chinese phone makers:coffee: because of their ability to offer premium phones at a low cost.

“It's because these vendors are really spreading out,” Erensen said, adding that companies like ZTE and Huawei are expanding from China into other developed and emerging markets.

ZTE and Huawei, for example, are offering smartphones at retail prices of US$100 to US300 in developed markets and between US$50 and US$150 in emerging markets, the analyst said.

He projected shipments of premium and entry-level smartphones in emerging markets to grow to 505 million units and 838 million units by 2017, respectively, higher than the estimated 358 million units and 78 million units expected to be shipped in mature markets.

According to tech-tracking firm International Data Corp. (IDC), South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. remained the world's largest smartphone maker in the second quarter of this year, shipping 72.4 million units for a 30.4 percent market share.

Apple Inc. ranked second with 13.1 percent of the global market, followed by South Korea-based LG Electronics Inc. with a 5.1 percent share, Lenovo with a 4.7 percent share and ZTE with a 4.2 percent share, IDC's data showed.

World's top 10 by 2016 or 2017:

Samsung、Apple、Lenovo、ZTE、Huawei、OPPO、Coolpad、LG、Meizu and Xiaomi?:D

Not necessarily in this order。

PS What about Gionee?

Oppo has better quality than ZTE, and should get more consumer attention.
